Dear Valued WOW! Customer,
Please accept my sincere apology for any problems you may have recently experienced with your WOW! Internet service.
On Sunday, 07/12, 2015, there was a malicious and coordinated action from an external party or parties that disrupted Internet service for our Michigan customers. What happened is known in technical circles as a Denial of Service or DOS attack. Essentially, these external sources intentionally overloaded the servers we use to route Internet traffic and created the access problems you may have experienced.
As soon as the issue was detected, our engineers and technicians were immediately dispatched to troubleshoot and fix the issue as quickly as they could.
IMPORTANT: Your confidential information (credit card number, etc.) was NOT compromised and is safe and secure.
We have reported this matter to federal law enforcement and will work closely with them in connection with their investigation. We will continue to monitor the situation recognizing that it has caused you and your family inconvenience. I truly appreciate your patience and understanding. As we further analyze the situation, I will keep you informed of additional actions we will take to ensure our Internet service is of the quality and reliability that you deserve.
Thank you for your understanding. We will continue to work hard to earn your continued patronage of WOW!.
I wouldn’t notice. My internet sucks 24/7.
Not a very major attack. It’s not very hard to perform a DDOS. All you need is a few people and botnets.
You just flood the target with traffic until it can’t handle it anymore.
Pretty much the easiest and most common “hacking.”
Thanks for the feedback. Not being a network wonk it is good to get perspective from the brain-trust known as FR ;-).
Yup, I was out most of Sunday.
Not a very major attack, if you enjoy playing computer chess most of the afternoon into the evening. I was stone cold out.
I experienced this. Fortunately, my cell phone has hotspot capability.
What? A DOS attack? I thought that was replaced by Windows a couple of decades ago.
I guess I’ll have to break out my old “The DOS will Rise Again” t-shirt...
This is more likely related to the physical line attacks out west from hard left groups than it is to the wall street glitches.
DoS, not DOS.
hoe-kay. u iz write. DoS attack, it is.
Think-- [flattened] spudgun, throwing ninja star, combo.
death, by a thousand paper floopy cuts
