The Audacity to Win
Slate ^ | July 13, 2015 | John Dickerson

".......In this modern age of hyperpartisan combat,no one running has consistently succeeded when fighting for conservative principles the way Walker has. Actually fighting and winning conservative fights is what voters are hungry for. That’s why Walker used the word “win” six times.

Where the candidates announce their candidacies tells you about their campaign. Jeb Bush chose Miami Dade College so that the tableau of diverse faces could speak to his effort to expand the Republican Party. Bush has since talked about the makeup of that crowd and how it doesn’t look like the typical Republican electorate. Walker’s crowd was 99 percent white, and he spoke in Waukesha County,a bright red Republican stronghold. Wisconsin is purple, but Walker has won by making the red parts redder. Unlike Bush, who seeks to be a synthesis candidate reaching out to new constituencies,Walker's promise to Republicans hungry for a presidential win is that he’ll amp up conservative turnout.

Walker never mentioned same-sex marriage, and he only quickly referred to abortion, but his pitch had echoes of what you would expect from a culture warrior. He is the one who not only beats liberals, but puts them in their place.

The audience cheered most loudly when he mentioned requiring a photo ID to vote,a concealed-carry handgun law that he had passed, and one establishing the castle doctrine. Those are policy positions, but they are also fault lines with liberals. The crowd wasn’t just rooting for Walker;they were rooting for a vision of America where the advancing liberals are vanquished. In the video montage that played before Walker appeared in his casual-Friday shirtsleeves, liberals like Ed Shultz and Rachel Maddow were shown despondent that Walker had survived the recall election so easily. Walker’s recall was presented not just as a victory for him but the moment “when America, got her voice back,”as one speaker put it.....

....Walker's rally featured a roster of conservative voices throwing red meat to the crowd of Walker supporters who had been through his heated campaigns and survival of a recall effort. One of the earliest lines to rev up the crowd came from Rachel Campos-Duffy, wife of U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy who took a shot at the former President Bill Clinton and with a not-too-subtle nod to the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

When she was describing the relationship between Walker and his wife Tonette, Campos-Duffy said "They've been married for 24 years. 24 is Bill Clinton's favorite age." CNN

I'd like to vanquish most of the rest of the Republican field as well, leaving Walker, Cruz, and Trump to duke it out, with Trump eventually saying something so outrageous as to alienate almost everyone.

“”Scott Walker is a national disgrace,” AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said in the entirety of his statement on Walker’s entry into the race.”

http://www.businessinsider.com/richard-trumka-statement-on-scott-walker-2015-7

“.... And lastly, Clinton went after Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker — who just entered the presidential race today — for his “mean-spirited, misguided attacks” against workers.

“Republican governors like Scott Walker have made their names by stomping on workers’ rights,” she said....”

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/hillary-clinton-attacks-scott-walker-jeb-bush-marco/story?id=32417860

“......Walker is also good at acting like a swell guy who’s just trying to help out. When asked by a conservative pundit about his support for mandatory ultrasounds for women seeking abortions, he acted like he is just trying to do the ladies a favor. “”I think about—my sons are 19 and 20, you know, we still have their first ultrasound picture,” he said. “It’s just a cool thing out there.” What’s especially cool about it is that doctors under his law are required to drag out the uncomfortable procedure as long as possible and lecture the patient about the embryo’s development.

Walker’s ability to shrug and pretend that he’s barely interested in this issue at all could work to make him seem like less of a threat to reproductive rights—and that could make him a formidable threat to Clinton. For Clinton to win, she has to get female and young voters fired up to vote, and such voters definitely get fired up by the war on women. If they don’t realize that Walker is a scary woman-basher, they might not mobilize in the numbers Clinton needs. That’s something Walker will be counting on.”

The problem with the abortion issue is that it fires up both sides, arguably with a slight advantage to ours.

I find it risible that any discussion about restricting something that leaves a permanent psychological scar on awoman which will haunt her the rest of her life is somehow a "war" on women. It doesn't get close to the typical reality: pregnant and frightened teenager, made a mistake, those around her making her "choice" for her...

"....Name almost any archetypal liberal Democrat, and the chances that they’ve quarreled publicly with Walker are good.

This isn’t simply a natural consequence of Walker’s operating in Wisconsin, even though politics in the state is much nastier and more polarized than many appreciate. On the contrary, there’s abundant reason to believe that Walker governs this way because he wants to, not because of circumstance. When he spoke at a D.C. breakfast in late-November of 2013, for example, he argued that bipartisan, “divided government” is “not necessarily a good thing.” Sharing power with the other side creates “a lot of gridlock,” he said. The barely hidden subtext of Walker’s remark — which, to be fair, is probably right on the merits — is that compromise isn’t desirable. It’s better to simply win.

Toss those remarks aside, though, and the overall picture is still the same. The most consequential decision he’s made as governor, for instance, was the union-busting budget he passed early in his first term. One of the reasons the budget was so controversial — and caught so many Wisconsinites flat-footed — was because Walker never made union-busting a focus of his 2010 campaign, regardless of what he later claimed. That budget was an example of Walker seizing an opportunity to blow up the very structure of Wisconsin liberalism. It was Walker following Rahm Emanuel’s advice, not wasting the economic crisis that helped him get elected.

Walker’s doctrinaire conservatism and sharp elbows did not go unnoticed in Wisconsin. In fact, his complete lack of interest in perpetuating the myth of Midwestern niceness is one reason why his union-busting inspired such a massive backlash. But Walker’s managing to withstand that backlash, and win two more elections, is a big point in his favor among conservatives. If he had won reelection without polarizing politics in his state even further, his candidacy would lose some of its luster. These people believe GOP losses can always be blamed on moderation. Walker’s story seems to provide much-needed evidence.

It may ultimately be the case, however, that Walker’s bone-deep understanding of the conservative movement does him more harm than good. He’ll certainly be in the running for the kind of primary voters Sen. Ted Cruz is targeting, but there are plenty of Republicans who are close enough to reality to see that being insufficiently right-wing is not the GOP’s issue. They’re not especially interested in Walker’s eccentric devotion to Ronald Reagan; they’re interested in a general election candidate who they think can win. And the donors who hold the keys to the nomination are equally unsentimental. They simply want to maximize the return on their investment.

If Walker’s only real obstacle to winning the GOP primary was Bush, he might be able to prevail despite opposition from the elite. Every once in a while in American politics, genuine people-power can outmuscle concentrated wealth and win. If you’re the kind of conservative who thinks John McCain is a liberal, though, Walker is not your only option. When it comes to winning elections, his best days are probably over. But if he ever ends up in the administration of a Republican president, conservatives will at least know who to call when they’re hoping to hear from one of their own."

Right now Trump has a tiger by the tail. Thing thing about being in that position is either way the tiger still wins. Trump CAN’T let go, at least IMHO. If he decides he wants off he will have to get behind a Walker or Cruz just to keep from being trampled. Either way the tiger (us) wins. Go Trump! LOL!

The article is written to imply that Walker short-changed pro-life, but he didn't and there was a big response when he said forcefully said:

"....Healthy or sick, born or unborn, I will fight and win for you. Young or old - or somewhere in between - I will fight and win for you..."

"....So not only has Scott Walker given choice to union workers -- he's given them choice to join the union or not, he's given 'em a choice to pay dues or not -- he's eliminated compulsory dues in Wisconsin. He has ended ironclad, lifetime appointments for indoctrinators and propagandists (i.e., teachers). I would dare say Scott Walker is doing what a lot of people consider impossible: Plucking parasites off the state treasury one by one, and making public sector unions accountable." - Rush Limbaugh, EIB - July 13, 2015

“....Washington politics, not to mention world affairs, is orders of magnitude bigger and harder than what Mr. Walker has dealt with in Wisconsin.

Moreover, Washington doesn’t lack for “fighters.” It has a shortage of leaders with the maturity to choose battles carefully and win them without setting bridges ablaze. If Mr. Walker made it to the general election, he would have to explain why his confrontational style would help in Washington.

He would also have to explain why his agenda should be the nation’s. Here, too, he would have a challenge. Mr. Walker’s signature struggle against Wisconsin’s public-sector unions was understandable, given how many states have seen unaffordable pension commitments steer them into budgetary disaster. His drive to reform public schools against the status-quo opposition was broadly worthy. But his flip to the far right on immigration — he has even made noises about reducing legal immigration — was not sensible. Nor was his decision to remove a 48-hour waiting period to buy guns in Wisconsin, or his desire to amend the Constitution to allow states to deny marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

It would be a big mistake to underestimate Mr. Walker, who has already shaken Wisconsin politics to its core and has a plausible path to the GOP nomination. He still has to show, however, that his supporters aren’t overestimating him.”

http://www.weeklystandard.com/print/blogs/walkers-agenda-reform-growth-safety_990372.html

Stephen F. Hayes:

“Wisconsin governor Scott Walker entered the Republican presidential race Monday in a forward-looking announcement speech that touched upon conservative principles that have guided his work in the state.

Walker stood in front of a flag-themed wood backdrop with a simple message – “Scott Walker, For America” – and delivered a speech with a simple message: “If our reforms can work in a blue state like Wisconsin, they can work anywhere in America.” He spoke for nearly forty minutes without a teleprompter or notes and delivered a speech that tracked nearly word-for-word the manuscript that his campaign had emailed out two hours before he took the stage.

In many respects, the announcement was vintage Walker – straightforward, matter-of-fact and full of lines that emphasize his Midwestern values. But unlike many of the speeches he’s given as a likely candidate, this one focused much less on his record in Wisconsin and spent considerably more time making a prescriptive case for an era of American recovery.......”

Washington Examiner: Scott Walker invites former hostage to campaign launch, as Obama negotiates with Iran

"Scott Walker's presidential campaign announcement happens to coincide with the latest deadline set by the Obama administration in its negotiations with Iran. But the presence of Kevin Hermening, the youngest American held hostage by Iran in 1979 for 444 days, will not be quite so serendipitous.

Walker often mentions Hermening in his stump speech when making his case about the best way to deal with Iran and other foreign adversaries. The Wausau, Wisc., resident told the Washington Examiner the Walker team invited him to Monday's announcement at the governor's request. He said he felt honored to receive the invitation, and added that he hoped to hear Walker articulate a vision that "lifts up and holds steadfast to the principles of a capitalist economic system and a peace through strength military posture."

"I'm expecting that he'll talk about the fact that hopefully he shares my belief that the United States has seen its influence on the world stage greatly diminish over the last eight years; that the United States is seen as a paper tiger when it comes to our adversarial relationships from around the world," Hermening said. "It's my hope that he will comment and talk about how important renewing the most important relationships of ours around the world, allied relationships, is."

As for President Obama's most recent overtures to Iran, Hermening thinks the president has taken the exact wrong approach.

"The Iranian government has never been held accountable for having violated the actual, or in spirit if not in deed, every tenet of international law for those 444 days we were in captivity," he said. "Quite honestly, any negotiation that our country engages in, or any two parties … certainly with governments, you need two honest brokers and it doesn't appear to me that the Iranians are at all, should be described as an honest broker in this negotiation."

Hermening, who spent 43 days in solitary confinement, was finally released from Iran when President Ronald Reagan took office. He previously told the Examiner that he met Walker in the 1980s as they volunteered for various Republican campaigns and were active in politics during the Reagan era. The governor's familiarity and proximity with Hermening has had an undeniable impact on his understanding of the United States' relationship with Iran."
