While advocating diversity in politics Saturday before the Kentucky Black Caucus meeting in Radcliff, GOP gubernatorial candidate Matt Bevin said he was against extending equal protection to the LGBT workforce.
Asked afterward if he was OK with an individual being fired because of sexual orientation, Bevin said, I believe in equal opportunity under the law, and in the forum said he believed in protecting religious freedoms.
I think we have laws that protect everybodys rights and that they should continue to exist just as they do, he said in an interview.
During the forum, Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor Sannie Overly said Frankfort needed to have a legislative conversation in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Courts decision to allow same-sex marriages in all 50 states.
I look forward to ... making sure all Kentuckians are protected in their homes and in their workplaces, she said.
In Kentucky, only state workers and those living in communities that have adopted so-called fairness ordinances are protected by law from discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation.
The two candidates sparred over many other issues while taking questions from a crowd of about 100 that included local elected officials and black politicians from across the state. Topics included early childhood education and the minimum wage.
Overly, a state representative from Kentuckys 72nd District, quoted a May article from The Courier-Journal in which Bevin is quoted as saying early childhood education serves no purpose after age 9. She said her ticket in contrast supports programs such as Kentucky Head Start.
All the research shows that early childhood education is critical for development and lays the foundation for lifelong success, which is why we are going to make an historic investment in (it), Overly said.

His response SHOULD have been "Yes, if someone loses their job or their home because they're heterosexual, I am NOT okay with that!"
And watch their heads explode.
Good take on it. He bungled that response. I don’t think it will make much of a difference in his prospects though. :’)
