In the first reissue of these documents since 1865, A City Laid Waste captures in riveting detail the destruction of South Carolina's capital city. William Gilmore Simms (1806-1870), a native South Carolinian and one of the nation's foremost men of letters, was in Columbia and witnessed firsthand the city's capture by Union forces and its subsequent devastation by fire. A renowned novelist and poet, who was also an experienced journalist and historian, Simms deftly recorded the events of February 1865 in a series of eyewitness accounts published in the first ten issues of the Columbia Phoenix and reprinted here. His record of burned buildings constitutes the most authoritative information available on the extent of the damage.
For this reason, shouldn't the US flag be taken down, too?
Those same childish clowns who were out there singing, partying and laughing today will get to that one next. They are looking forward to the day that the U.S. flag is banned and taken down also. They love their victories over the American people. They want all traces of America and history erased.
They don’t know history, don’t care about history.
Let us assume the story is as the headline says.
20 rapes by an army of more than 60,000 men?
There were zero white women raped. Is this not a demonstration of racial prejudice?
Reverse the races and you have a typical modern day in a U.S. state
Seriously?
Is the placating of thugs nationwide, toprevent them from burning down their neighborhood and their city is now a crisis that warrants freaking news on every MSM TV and cable channel?
Really?
One agenda at a time, please.
Take a number, now serving Customer #666...
I am sick of the ignorant about this flag.
When I ask them why it’s racist they say it was for the Confederacy which was for slavery.
Once I point out that the flag was not the official Confederate Govts flag , but just a battle flag they looked surprised.
They then usual state to me how the KKK flew it and once again I tell them that the stars and stripes flew with the KKK.
By now they are a little speechless, but they try to carry it on by saying how it’s a flag of oppression and slavery.
I then point out that the stars and stripes flew on slave ships, flew up north when slavery was legal then, and flew out west robbing , raping, killing, and displacing Native Americans.
Now by this time they usually tell me in a mood or a bad temper that the flag should still come down, because it’s offensive.
Once I again point out that some people see the stars and stripes offensive , especially native Americans they now usually call me a name, walk off, or just stand there with their mouth open looking to catch flies.
I usually try and get in that if we should ban anything because it represents slavery, oppression, and the KKK then should we ban the party which was responsible for it all.
LOL, Most actually say yes until I point out it was the Democratic party which they probably vote for.
Now by this time they have nothing to say , but some do come back with how I ma being ridiculous.
In the end I win , they lose and they look stupid.
Will there be a US flag raised where they take down the Confederate Battle flag?
I would worry a LOT more at the current oppression and slavery of the entire U.S. Population by a thug government and ignorant segment of the population whose main achievement is arson robbery, murder, rape, random beatings and the continuing attempt to rule their cities and neighborhood through intimidation and murder.
If the intention is another civil war, I can't think of a better war to feed the animals.
Currently the American flag is burned and stomped on courtesy of the SCOTUS who said that was free speech guaranteed by the Constitution. However, should a freedom loving American try to stop it they’re the one’s who are arrested.
I am a serious devotee of Edgar Allan Poe, who was not only America's most innovative writer; Poe was our foremost literary critic in the first half of the 19th Century--and doubtless the most talented ever. He recommended Simms work.
The US flag already flies over the capitol building. The confederate flag was relegated to its current, almost invisible (except for those who wish to see it) position in 2000, and is hidden behind a monument. To my knowledge, no addition US flag will be flown, besides the one above the capitol.
Sure. You want to show me anybody anywhere who claimed that Union soldiers were all non-racists? Most of them were by present standards highly racist. Does anybody claim otherwise?
But the result of their fighting was to free these slaves. Also a fact. As opposed to the results if their opponents had won, which would have been to keep them as slaves.
So we’ve got Team A, racist but anti-slavery, versus Team B, racist and pro-slavery.
What exactly is your point?
Add to that the thousands of innocent farm animals violated by those marauding northern monsters.
...they dont know history, they dont care about history....
George Orwell wrote this about government
control in the future decades ago in 1984. But, that future is now.
“Those who control the present control the past.
Those who control the past control the future.”
Should a US flag fly over memorials to men who fought against it? Would they even have wanted that?
I think RAP is offensive, intrusive when wielded by morons, it feeds irritation, rage and other undesirable passions in the majority of the population.
Should these frustrated and fed-up victims burn down their neighborhood? Is that the new universal normal for "political activism" and "free speech?"
