Fireworks took on a second meaning in Chicago this 4th of July weekend.
Dozens of people were shot, including a 7-year-old boy who died while celebrating with his family. It was one of many incidents that police Superintendent Garry McCarthy called the result of a broken system.
The city saw a total of 34 shooting incidents this past weekend, the Chicago Police Department told ABC News. There were 48 victims, including 7 murder victims, according to the police.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel was "saddened and sickened" by the weekend's violence, he said at a news conference Monday on an unrelated topic.

We spent Sunday afternoon in a brewery on the south side of Chicago. We both had guns. There were no problems.
L
Gun problem?
Or dependent, corrupt and violent people problem?
And it'll stay broken as long as they keep blaming someone other than themselves.
Yes.
And all illegally owned and possessed in a city with minimal no respect for our 2nd amendment. How many fewer deaths if law-abiding citizens could arm and defend themselves and the everyone focus on eliminating criminals?
Chicago you have a criminal problem.
Libtard answer to this: more "gun control" laws. Because while they have absolutely nothing to do with the 4th Amendment, they make idiot liberals feel good.
From 1991 to 2004, gangs were behind the biggest chunk of killings in Chicago, or one-third of them, according to the Chicago Police Department. ... Gang violence was trailed by armed robberies, which made up less than one-tenth of the killings, the police department said.
Libtard answer: ... you guessed it, more "gun control" because that is always so effective at curtailing violent criminal gangs' access to firearms .... NOT!
Seriously, liberals at the bottom level have to be the most ignorant, gullible swine. They believe their "leaders" who claim no matter what the problem is, "gun control" is the answer. Look at the {expletive} facts people! So-called "gun control" will not make one whit of difference, even if the most draconian laws are enacted and enforced with a wildly unrealistic 100% success rate. Not ... one ... bit ... of .. difference. All your efforts are for naught.
Liberals at the upper echelons are just as easy to understand. The know "gun control" is meaningless in terms of public safety. All they are interested in is a disarmed and compliant populace. {expletive} fascist {expletives}.
Yes, that ‘gun problem’ in Charleston, SC, is a significant problem. It is a shame that the gun walked into a church and started shooting...
OH, right, that was a white guy, which means that confederate flags are to blame for the shooting, whereas in Chicago, it is the guns rather than blacks who are doing the shooting.
I forget, everything is racial bias unless it applies to blacks, then you blame inanimate objects for the actions of their users.
Yes they do. I heard on one of the gun podcasts that i listen to that of the 90 federal judicial districts in the US, Chicago ranked dead last in federal gun prosecutions, yet the Mayor and Police Commissioner whine about needing more gun laws. Apparently the standard in Chicago is to let criminals plead down for serious gun crimes and they don’t turn much over to the feds who generally don’t hand out sweet plea deals like many state courts. Perhaps if Chicago vigorously prosecuted and locked up habitual criminals the violence would get better. The problem in Chicago is not a gun problem, it is a law enforcement problem.
In places like Chicago the bad guys have guns and the good guys (for the most part) don’t. When we change this dynamic things will eventually take care of itself.
Chicago’s gun problem is fueled by the illegal drug industry. When ill-educated gang banger’s only chance for employment is to become the neighborhood heroin dealer, we have a culture that is in full self-destruct mode, aided by guns. If there were no guns, there would be other weapons. A cross-bow is quieter and can be made with easy to obtain materials. A Molotov cocktail only needs a good throwing arm and bombs can kill without the ability to aim a weapon. Street justice, as a part of the illegal drug industry, will go on as long as there are illegal drugs to sell and the desire to control the marketplace.
The illegal drug industry leaves a wide trail of collaborative damage. Not only with gang bangers shooting their competitors, but also, the effects on the mental ability of drug users to control themselves enough to keep from murderous impulses. Every city ravaged by illegal drug use has the corresponding impact of assaults, murders, rapes, child molestations, robberies and an endless list of criminal activity. That is because the nature of drugs on the mind destroys the ability of self control. A mind addled by drugs has no impulse control and is driven by the need gratify their desires without limits. This mindless instability gets ingrained into the culture to such an extent that one can say it is on a suicide march to extinction.
We need to detoxify those communities who are being poisoned by the impact of drugs. This is all to say that instead of controlling the guns, we need to control the drugs.
They had no gun problems at the Three Grateful Dead shows. It seems like the dealers would be killing each other to claim Soldier Field for that weekend.
“Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel was “saddened and sickened”
No he wasn’t...he was giddy. Now this stupid bastard will up the rhetoric on more gun control laws.
“Gun problem” is a code word for black criminals. You notice the church in South Carolina was not a gun problem but specifically a white man is evil and we are all oppressed by their privilege problem.
It's the Chicago Way. What's going on in the streets was learned by example from City Hall.
