Kansas Governor: State Can’t Punish Religious Groups Over Same-Sex Marriage Objections

By Sandhya Somashekhar July 7

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback (R) on Tuesday issued an executive order asserting that clergy and religious organizations cannot be penalized by the state for refusing to recognize or provide services for a same-sex marriage.

The order comes nearly two weeks after the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry, paving the way for gay couples to marry across the country. It is the latest sign that the battle has shifted to the issue of religious liberties, and how much leeway people of faith have to opt out of providing services to or recognizing gay unions.

Gay rights groups immediately condemned the executive order. In a statement, Sarah Warbelow, legal director for the Human Rights Campaign, said the order both feeds false rumors that clergy will ultimately be forced to officiate same-sex marriages, and invites hospitals and other religiously affiliated organizations to refuse to recognize gay couples’ marriages.

“Having nothing to do with religious freedom and everything to do with enabling discrimination, this executive order is divisive, unnecessary, and sends the wrong message,” she said.

Every Republican candidate running for the Presidency must be held to this test.

Would they encourage state officials to follow religious conscience?

If they don’t, kick ‘em out.

doesn’t go far enough

“The order bars the state from acting against any individual clergy or religious leader who declines to participate in a same-sex ceremony, or any religious group that declines to provide services for or recognize a same-sex marriage if it conflicts with their faith or moral conviction. “

the order needs to actually stop any private lawsuits within state courts against religious entities. keep it at the fed level and maybe reimburse the defendants or actually provide a defense for all lawsuits at fed level

Strange that states have no rights on this but they can defy US dope selling/smoking laws and have sanctuary cities against US laws.

It’s astonishing, tragic, and sickening that governor after governor has recognized that the Supreme Court’s decision on gay marriage can be nullified.

Why?

Because in 42 years, NO governor has ever realized that he does not have to obey the Supreme Court’s command to deny the unborn the protection of the law.

In 42 years, NO Catholic bishop has instructed the governors that the Supreme Court’s command to deny the protection of the law to the unborn MUST be disobeyed, and that it is a mortal sin to obey it.

Instead of doing their job—teaching—the bishops have hired political consultants, lawyers, advertising agencies, etc.

Last night, while crawling through cyberspace, I saw a mention that the City Of Noo Yawk was drafting an ordinance stating that all those who do not support the homosexuality laws will be asked to leave the city.

The date referred to was late 2014, and I have been searching for it - but Google keeps redirecting me to homo-pride websites.

If anyone has heard such a reference, I woudl dearly like to see a site or link or page.

Every Republican candidate running for the Presidency must be held to this test.

I'm looking for the candidate who says "if elected president, I will instruct all federal law enforcement agencies to disregard the SCOTUS ruling on gay marriage."

What about religious individuals or religious company owners.

I don't think they have to worry because unlike Oregon or Colorado Kansas has no laws prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation.

You, sir, have touched on the very reason these immoral acts have been able to persist in the US - the inaction of the Catholic Church’s leadership. It is unequivocally clear that they have given cover to the Catholic politicians that have foisted these evils on us, with only few exceptions.

The efforts of the Catholic bishops to prop up pro-abortion Democrats have been tireless. The “peace pastoral,” the “seamless garment,” the “consistent ethic of life”—all have been weapons in that war. Communion-for-Pelosi is another.

The message from the bishops has been loud and clear: Pro-life politicians are “inconsistent,” and want to BLOW UP THE WORLD, KILL THE POOR, and DESTROY THE WORLD WITH CARBON.

Only ONE bishop—Cardinal O’Boyle of Washington—upheld Humanae Vitae. During the Rescue Movement, only ONE bishop—René Gracida—taught the cops that it was a mortal sin for them to remove people from clinic doorways. Today, only about ten bishops don’t give Communion to pro-aborts.
