The Northern Territorys most senior indigenous affairs bureaucrat wore a shirt bearing the controversial Confederate battle flag to a beef breeders dinner and won best dressed on the night.
Eyebrows were raised in some sections at the Central Australian Beef Breeders dinner when Mark Coffey, the Northern Territory manager in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, rocked up in the shirt, bearing a flag which is offensive to many because of its connection to slavery and white supremacist groups.
Mr Coffey won best-dressed man at the dinner.
He declined to comment when contacted by the NT News.
Debate has flared in the US on the flag and there have been moves to ban it from flying at all government buildings.

Well, Australia is WAY in the deep South.
Gotta love the Aussies!
Unfortunately, I can’t share the images because of copyright - a google search for “Mark Coffey” “Confederate flag” should produce results.
He was accompanied by a lady (his wife, I’m guessing, but I don’t know) wearing the British flag, suggesting that was the actual theme of their costumes.
Indeed.
Way to go, Aussies.
Liberals are worth sliming...always!
Do bear in mind that in Australia, the Liberals are the conservatives.
This man works is part of a Liberal government.
Nice shirt. Maybe some enterprising Yankee will make a killing making them.
Well, it was a 4th of July event. Perhaps the theme was "Countries that have fought the US".
Good show mate!
The theme of the dinner was ‘Red, White, and Blue’, and people were asked to wear costumes revolving around that theme.
While the theme does seem to have been chosen because of the date, it wasn’t specifically stated to be American.
I recall seeing a photo of Russian guys flying the Northern Virginia battle flag.

Yes, the Eastern Ukraine rebel flag looks very similar to the N.V. battle flag. The photo I saw was a few years ago, and the flag also had stars, looking exactly like the battle flag. BTW, I thought the Red Army Choir singing “Sweet Home Alabama” did a good job.
A year ago last June, HuffPo ran an item asking, Pro-Russian Separatists Are Flying the Confederate Flag. Why? It was illustrated with a Getty stock image of a torn Confederate flag flapping in the wind. It was a short piece and offered no information as to the image's context. It simply linked to a longer Reason article which contained only the starless version.
If the Ukrainian rebels actually were flying the Stars and Bars, maybe it was because supplies of the Novorossiyan flag were low, and so they ordered "rebel flags" off Amazon Prime.
BTW, I thought the Red Army Choir singing Sweet Home Alabama did a good job.

Down in the comments, Dmitri Cherepovetsky writes, "Sweet Home Crimea!"
Interesting.
