We're Doomed: Only 19% of Americans Know That the First Amendment Guarantees Freedom of Religion

It's official, we're screwed:

Only 19 percent of American adults know that the First Amendment to the Bill of Rights guarantees the freedom of religion, according to a new survey by the Newseum Institute.

Only 10 percent know the First Amendment guarantees the freedom of the press.

And 33 percent of Americans have no idea at all what rights the First Amendment guarantees.

CNS News posted a graph of the breakdown of results:

The graph showis that 57 percent of respondents knew that the First Amendment guarantees freedom of speech, and then 19 percent knew that it guarantees freedom of religion, 10 percent knew that it guarantees freedom of the press and right to assembly and even less knew the First Amendment guarantees the right to petition.

The Newseum explains their methodology:

The Newseum conducted a general public survey of attitudes about the First Amendment once again in 2015. The questionnaire was administered to a national sample of 1,002 American adults by telephone. The questionnaire was developed by Dr. Ken Dautrich, President of The Stats Group and Gene Policinski, Chief Operating Officer of the Newseum Institute. The survey was conducted from May 14 through 23, 2015.

Interviews were conducted under the supervision of Dr. Dautrich. The interviewers were conducted by trained, professional interviewers through the use of a computer-assisted-telephone-interviewing system (CATI). The survey instrument and related survey protocols were field tested and refined prior to commencing the survey. Interviews were extensively monitored to ensure quality standards.

The national sample used in this survey included national phone numbers in the contiguous 48 states. The sample was stratified to ensure that broad geographic regions were represented in proportion to their share of the total adult population in the United States. Within each of these regions, telephone numbers were generated using a random-digit-dial (RDD) process thus giving every phone number a chance of being selected. Once selected, each phone number was contacted a minimum of four times to attempt to reach an eligible respondent. Within each household, one eligible respondent was interviewed. The RDD sample was supplemented with a random sample of cell phone numbers.

The margin of error in the poll was +/-3.2 percent.

The results of this Newseum poll is a good indication of why the country is declining. How do only 19 percent of the population know that freedom of religion is guaranteed by the First Amendment? And shame on the 33 percent of Americans that didn't know the First Amendment guarantees any rights.

According to CNS News, the highest amount of ignorance was when 40 percent of Americans couldn't name any rights guaranteed by the First Amendment in 2008. I guess it's slightly encouraging that society is a tiny bit more informed about basic Constitutional rights.

It really shouldn't be all surprising that only 19 percent of Americans know that the First Amendment guarantees freedom of religion given the recent attacks on freedom of religion such as this and this. And the Newseum poll combined with the recent video of Americans not knowing why we celebrate the Fourth of July shows the state of the education system.

We're doomed.

What’s even worse is probably a third of those that know it are hard core leftists that hate that right.

Actually I have to give credit to 81% of Americans for knowing the 1st Amendment doesn’t guarantee a damn thing regarding Fredom of Religion. Try refusing to bake a cake for or photographing a gay “wedding.”

Neither the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, nor any of the amendments “Guarantee” anything.

Rights are given to us by God. These documents only attempt to Enumerate some of our inalienable rights that are inherently ours.

That is not a small distinction, and it irritates me when people don’t seem to understand this.

I do not wish to change my post. I understood the article and I meant what I posted. If Americans don’t know what the First Amendment guarantees, our public schools are failing.

Public schools may not spend much time teaching the First Amendment. I believe they would rather us forget what it guarantees. They don’t want anything that interferes with their indoctrination.

True as far as I know, but that being the case the Judges just made an illegal law.

The first amendment states that Congress shall make no laws concerning the establishment of religion, etc.

The first amendment specifically prohibits congress from making religious laws.

The first amendment does not prohibit states from doing anything as the states are not governed by congress.

Where are the constitutional lawyers when they are needed.

Well, they are not particularly persons of real faith. Most think all you need is love. (Geese). It’s like riding horses, any smoe will tell you they can ride a horse after doing it once, but real riders know after a question or two, that these folks are only SITTING on a horse. Same with faith, it is the least of all effort and energy to mentally think it - that you believe in God or whatever. True faith is when you really put your faith into practice, by attending church, studying the bible or tenets, praying, $ supporting and working to manifest the doctrine of your faith into your daily life - heck that takes work, that takes effort and most people are still back at “yeah, I believe in God.” So it’s no surprise that they are clueless about freedoms covered under 1st Amendment and what was lost in the latest “Scrotum” decisions. Clueless.

The public schools are busy teaching our children how to become homosexuals. It’s unreasonable to expect the schools to also teach old fashioned subjects like the 3R’s and American history or political science. And remember that the U.S. constitution is just an outdated relic of a previous racist white slave owning ruling elite, anyway.

WAY past time. John Dewey (Father of Modern Education) signed the Humanist Manifesto and he was a socialist-—one of the Postmodernists who wanted to destroy Christianity which meant destroy Classical Education (includes the Bible)-—so that children would have tribal minds-—no ability for abstract, profound thinking....like all our Founders had....and Americans even with only 4 years of Classical Education.

Classical Education gives you the TOOLS to think with-—Socratic Methodology (dialectics), Aristotelian Logic (which includes his Ethics with the added Theological virtues, Faith, Hope and Charity (Love). And Euclidean Proofs.......we had Rhetoric taught so all the logical fallacies (LIES) could easily be picked out.

The Dewey system is “operant conditioning” to program Marxist ideology (collectivism) to destroy Individualism and destroy Wisdom of the Ages (all history is twisted and warped or erased) and “thinking outside the box” and humiliate and emasculate boys-—force dependency and non-risk taking-—to sexualize them-—to destroy virtue formation so they remain puerile, weak and controlled by vice. Socrates knew that without Virtue, there can be no Freedom. Without masculine mature males—there is no civil society.
