What irks me is the hypocrisy, as well as egocentricity. They are allowed to be offended by a Confederate flag. But I am not allowed to be offended by a rainbow flag. Or a picture of Jenner. I'm bigoted & narrow-minded as opposed to their enlightenment.
They were expecting riots that never came. If Charlotte erupted in rioting and violence I don’t think we’d be having this debate about the flag.

Unfortunately, most of us are not represented by our betters in politics, media and the cultural elite. Our ruling class missed the unity and healing in Charleston completely — so anxious were they to make Roof the epitome of the knuckle-dragging white Southerner (and Republican, at that, though there is no evidence of his membership in the GOP)

President Tyler of Virginia was elected as a Whig. South Carolina’s John Calhoun, one of the more famous politicians of the 19th century, was a Democrat-Republican, a Whig, or a Democrat depending upon the year.
There would have been no Republicans in the south because as the Whigs dissolved the Republicans began as northern regional party openly hostile to the south. The remains of the Whigs in the south became Constitutional Unionist or Democrat or some minor party.

Nope, it won’t stop with the Confederate Flag. The American Flag is next on the list.
I know that there is no real difference, just like there is no real difference if the flag exists or not. There are much larger issues at stake. I point out that they were democrats because most people think there is a difference, that republicans are evil. They would not believe anyone who told them Bull Connor was a democrat.
I remember when Quayle Benson debated and Quayle said he was inspired by Kennedy. Benson snapped back that he knew Kennedy and that Quayle is no Kennedy. When the shoe is on the other foot, the republicans allow Obama to use Lincoln in a way that would have caused a conniption had the situation been reversed. Republicans are stupid and need to shove this trash back in the democrat’s face, but they would only do that if they were truly different.
I know, but the American people think it will stop, and that’s what matters to them.
