A darker emblem looms over the heated conversation about a controversial American symbol. To hammer home how problematic the continued state-sanctioned tolerance of the Confederate battle flag is in parts of the United States, some have drawn comparisons to the infamous banner of Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany.
"It would be like having the swastika flag flying on your next-door neighbor," said Whoopi Goldberg, on ABC's The View on Monday. "If the Confederate flag continues to fly, the statement that's being made . . . is that 'We miss this really crappy part of history.' " To be sure, Nazi Germany was a vastly different political entity than the Confederacy, and existed in a vastly different historical context.
But the growing backlash against the Confederate flag does suggest that, a century and a half later, Americans are finally accepting what Goldberg and many others believe it has represented all along: not heritage, nor pride, nor a badge of Southern identity, but a regime of white supremacists who went to war against the Union to preserve the inhuman institution of slavery.

You are allowed to fly a nazi flag.
Germans aren’t.
Can German rednecks fly the flag?
They aren’t free, with rights from G-d.
They aren’t free, with rights from G-d.
Simple question. What political party does the Nazi flag represent? The National Socialist Party.
So, what party did the several Confederate flags represent? The SOUTHERN DEMOCRATIC secessionist party and armies.
Nothing more.
Why I would draw Mohammed, because I am not supposed to draw Mohammed.
Why do I fly the Battle Flag? Because I am not supposed to fly the Battle flag.
NEVER tell an AMERICAN what he can or cannot do, what he can or cannot own.
Dont see many of those on government buildings here. Yet.
Although not politically “correct” by lib standards, feel free them fly yohr own stars and bars.
If I recall correctly the Confederates didn't gas millions of people. So I think the Nazi parallels are a bit out of line.
***said Whoopi Goldberg,***
Is THIS the woman who, after a trip to AFRICA, said “I’m glad my ancestors caught the boat!” or was OPRAH.
Political correctness cannot be coded into American law as long as constitutional guarantees of free speech remain in effect. However politically correct behavior is now expected by employers and educators. Government cannot legislate against free speech but free expression is being severely inhibited since people fear for their jobs and employability if they “offend” and students know the real consequences of disagreeing with their teachers.
If you are going to buy into those standards, then why stop there? That same regime of white supremacists (aka the Democratic Party) reinstituted White Supremacy in the South after the war and kept it in place until the 1960s. Ban Woodrow Wilson, ban FDR, ban William Jennings Bryan, ban Grover Cleveland, ban Davis Bacon, ban Robert Byrd, ban Al Gore Sr., ban William Fulbright, ban Harry Truman, ban Henry Wallace, ban Huey Long, ban Lyndon Johnson, ban Fritz Hollings, ban Scoop Jackson, ban Orville Faubus and all the rest.
Which flag?
The next thing on the agenda will be too stop all Civil War re-enactments.
Germans don’t have a First Amendment.
Europeans think differently than ordinary Americans (and the Founding Fathers) when it comes to the rights of the people versus the power of the state.
I guess Newsday is hard up for circulation.
Even though the North won?
My wife has worn a swastika pendant for as long as I’ve known her. She’s Buddhist and the swastika is a very old Buddhist symbol of good fortune as well as the Buddha’s footprints and the Buddha’s heart.
She can’t help it that the Nazis perverted the symbol.
