Former Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.), a possible 2016 presidential candidate, said on Wednesday that Americans should rethink rushing to ban displays of the Confederate flag at state Capitols.
Webb, a former secretary of the Navy, defended the historic emblems use in a post on his Facebook account.
The Confederate Battle Flag has wrongly been used for racist and other purposes in recent decades, Webb said. It should not be used in any way as a political symbol that divides us.
Honorable Americans fought on both sides in the Civil War, he added. Webb was the first potential candidate to launch an exploratory committee for next years White House race, though hed face a steep climb to a Democratic nomination. Front-runner Hillary Clinton has strongly backed recent moves to remove the Confederate flag from positions of prominence.
Webb urged Americans to respect the bravery and heroism of individual Confederate and Union soldiers during the Civil War.
"It was in recognition of the character of soldiers on both sides that the federal government authorized the construction of the Confederate Memorial 100 years ago, on the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery, Webb said.

And btw, Doberman Pinschers are awesome animals. They possess a very neutral temperament and are one of the most intelligent dog breeds you'll ever find. But I digress.
How pathetic is it when the only politician that will stand up the left’s attempt at cultural genocide is a Democrat.
Republicans are making a HUGE mistake here!
They were already suspect in the South to begin with.
The RINO’s are risking the entire Southern conservative coalition over this.
Has Sarah Palin weighed in yet?
Holy crap.
One Democrat that has balls.
About time someone had balls to stand up and tell the truth, and no surprise that it is not a republican.
June 27th the left are having a burn the battle flag day.
June 28th there is a fly your battle flag day.
Because republicans have no balls to stand against the left and the media which are one of the same.
Let’s see, while ISIS is destroying all historical signs in the middle east, we are all joining together to destroy our historical signs, in this country. Because the PC crowd has deemed it necessary to destroy our historical signs in this country. Does any one out there see what these people are doing to our history? When are we going to make a stand, and tell them ENOUGH IS ENOUGH?
Some blacks in Louisiana have said it does not offend them.
There was, some years ago, a black guy that walked across the South with a Confederate flag. He said his ancestors fought for the South in the Civil War.
Sorry whether it`s Manchin or Webb they are all losers, He is not Christian because he is a member of the party with the anti Christian platform, he is NOT pro Life, pro family or Christian
Sorry
The only southern states that a democrat can possibly carry is Virginia and North Carolina. That’s because of the influx of Yankees in the last 20 years or so. Democrats have no chance of carrying any other southern state. I do not consider Florida southern. But I have said before that republicans need every vote they can muster to defeat the battleaxe Hillary Clinton and they absolutely can not afford to lose any swing state and think they can win. Virginia and NC are a must if a republican is going to win. Virginia and NC might were winnable until the sorry ass governors threw the battle flag under the bus and are now calling for the destruction of anything to do with Confederate heritage. There are proud Republican voters that love their ancestors and they will not show up to vote next year. Once more the stupid party has cut their own throats. Republicans might not win another president election, ever. Caving into the demands of liberals is the last straw. Disband the GOP.
Here he is embracing Obama and trashing Sarah Palin in 2008, the man is pure filth
