Paedophile priest Brendan Smyth told a doctor he may have sexually abused hundreds of children, an inquiry has heard.

He said: "Over the years of religious life it could be that I have sexually abused between 50 and 100 children. That number could even be doubled or perhaps even more."
Northern Ireland's long-running Historical Abuse Inquiry is holding a focused module into how Smyth, a member of the Norbertine Order, was allowed to continue offending for more than four decades.
Joseph Aiken, counsel for the inquiry said it was the first time the serial child molester's comments had been made public.
Mr Aiken said: "The story that's about to unfold over the coming days is steeped in deep and prolonged human suffering of the abused.
"The inquiry will have to consider whether it is also a story of a litany of missed opportunities to properly deal with Smyth by a significant number of individuals who were themselves in positions of considerable trust, power and influence not only over him, his victims and their families."
Retired judge Sir Anthony Hart is leading the HIA inquiry, one of the UK's largest inquiries into physical, sexual and emotional harm to children at homes run by the church, state and voluntary organisations.

There are beliefs in many denominations of Christianity that have been perverted by scratch. None of us have it totally correct.
I believe God is more merciful than we mortals give Him credit. God knows that satan is working overtime to pervert His church. God knows our spiritual blindness, God knows our fleshly weaknesses. This journey is about sanctification of the faithful. We are inundated with worldly messages on a daily basis. If we stumble and fall, get back up and head back to the Lord...not away in shame.
God is not some cosmic kill joy just waiting to poof us into a pillar of smoldering ashes. His grace doesn't extend to us...until the next time we sin. His saving grace through the blood of the Lamb is constant, all encompassing, forever.
Jesus didn't teach the disciples while on earth and then as he was ascending into heaven look down and say, “good luck to you guyz, see ya soon”.
God doesn't look upon His faithful and say....oh man, you really screwed the pooch now Mr., you better wail and mourn and pray I forgive you.
No! God reaches out with a loving hand and accepts us into His grace again. It is man of all denominations that has taught that God is angry and His judgment is severe. You better give those tithes, you better tow the line, you better serve....or else!
