As the New York Times reports this morning, not a single Republican presidential candidate has the courage to tell South Carolina to stop flying the Confederate battle flag from its state capitol. It is a bit late for that, to be sure; public display of any kind of the symbol of the slaveholders rebellion should have been banned after the Union victory in 1865. Removing the Confederate flag from the grounds of South Carolinas seat of government has become an African-American cause in the wake of last weeks Charleston church massacre. It may be incommensurate with the crime, but black Americans are entirely justified in their rancor against official sanction of a symbol of slavery.
On moral grounds I sympathize with the African-American view, but there is an even more urgent reason to rip down the Confederate flag. Our refusal to look squarely at the evil character of the American Confederacy turned us into idiots. It may be a bit late to remedy this national lapse in mental capacity, but one has to start somewhere.

Next the New York Times will be calling for the tear down of slave-owning George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate. Good thing it is not on state or federal property.
You know what makes America stupid? Politicians with no courage. Why the focus on a flag? Take about a wedge issue and we all just go down the path that the piper makes. Its like the media says “what can we use to make the republicans look racist” and viola, our guys/gals always take the premise and bait and run with it.
symbol of slavery? I thought the stars and bars were so that the newly formed CSA wouldn’t shoot the hell out of each other upon meeting engagements early in the war.
Shrug. Ok, we'll rely on the racial agitators to catch up on a little history.
In the meanwhile, I'll be flying:
The U.S. flag and the British flag flew over slavery, too. So?
Heck, the U.S. flag once flew over a country where marriage was between a a man and a woman. How evil is that?
The map is not the territory. Symbols are not reality.
I’m sure that this article won’t be at all controversial.
The "Stars and Bars" (shown in the reply below yours) is what caused the confusion on the battlefield. Hence the creation of the Confederate Battle Flag incorporating the St. Andrew's Cross.
If anything is racially offensive it is the Democratic party but I guess history is not taught in school anymore.
No the Communist party and the low info voter is what makes America stupid.
Worrying about the Confederate battle flag is what makes America stupid
The war and slavery has been over in this country for 150 years. Lets get over it already.
While I’ve usually have the highest regard for Goldman’s writing going back 15 years, on this issue I think he has turned into a blithering idiot.
Southerners NEVER get tired of Yankees telling them how stupid they are.
No, there is a surprising amount of agreement on the topic around here. What took the politicians so long to catch up? :)
First, people should research (google) Confederate battle flag, as that had a red bar.
Don’t know or care who this “Spengler” is. His self-important intellectual preening makes this article unreadable and unimportant.
I thought it was supposed to be pork that makes you stupid. Maybe it is just all part of the “good-old-boy” culture, the Redneck credo, or something.
Just bitter clingers. Guns, God, and the spirit of the Confederacy, are all anathema to the “popular opinion”.
Really get their knickers in a knot. Whistle a few bars of “Dixie”.
It’s coming and many on the right will salute the move
