I hear what you say, and the average American voter is not that ‘tuned in’. But, you gotta take into account the ‘zeitgeit’ (social, economic and political) around each election, and the availability and viability of alternative candidates, at every election.

the average American voter is not that "tuned in"With out-of-control black rabble rousers, an economy that isn't producing anywhere near enough jobs that provide self-sufficiency, US citizens possibly being force-fed that trade deal, and endless wars, average folk have become very aware. Most people I know have no confidence that our politicians are doing anything that will save the US.

I think it's the opposite. The average American voter is tuned in but has a short attention span. They'll be so sick of the political circus freak show that by the time the election rolls around, most won't be tuned in and will stay home.
