At least 27 people were killed and over 60 injured near the Syrian capital of Damascus in attacks by pro-government forces on Tuesday, Al Jazeera reported. The attacks, which were allegedly carried out using improvised weapons known as “elephant rockets,” reportedly targeted rebel-held areas in the city of Douma, about 6 miles from Damascus.

These weapons are made by attaching rocket motors to much larger bombs -- a process that increases their destructive power while greatly reducing accuracy.

That, and barrel bombs, are terror weapons that are great a killing and maiming civilians, but don’t do much to suppress insurgent activity. Hope Bashar al-Assad realizes that the fat lady is warming up.

Just the thing for third-world military organizations.

I'm sure the UN Commission on Human Rights will be ramping up a big outrage parade on this one, as soon as they get back from Ramadan vacation.

I didn’t expect to find a coherent explanation of this weapon in the article and there isn’t one.

yeah I know nothing about military strategy but I don’t see how these things are going to stop the assault on the regime. I just hope a huge cache of weapons arent captured by the likes of Isis

The Japanese on Iwo Jima left a bunch of these. They act like no one has seen these before. An entire class of fools.

What if the rocket motor was attach to a much smaller bomb? Is that called a hyrax bomb?

During WWII, the British had a "Disney bomb", a rocket-assisted penetrating dumb bomb for attacking concrete sub pens and other hardened targets.

It would seem Syria is running out of artillery shells but has plenty of rockets and left over bombs.

It reminds me of the Japanese desperation that resulted in Kamakazi weapons

yeah, he’s in a lot of trouble. Seems the Turks are nervous about the Kurds taking some territory on their border and are thinking of sending troops over there.
Something like that. I was never good with details lol

They are just a bomb and an unguided rocket. Are similar weapons in the US inventory ‘terror weapons’?

You’re comparing MLRS to cobbled together shlock? Anyhow, since Assad’s regime tends to use them on its own neighborhoods, I’d say yes, they’re terror weapons. At this point, the Assad regime is a dying beast that is lashing out aimlessly. That’s all I have to say about this.

You are an idiot if you think MLRS is unguided rockets. It is rocket artillery, goes where it is supposed to, but it is unguided in the sense of terminal guidance.

That’s all I have to say about this.

Good, since you have finished the short trip to the end of your knowledge.
