Chicago Democrats Make Appeal To Republican Candidates (NPR Interview)
NPR ^ | 06/13/2015 | SCOTT SIMON

Posted on 06/14/2015 11:49:26 AM PDT by Kid Shelleen

Pastor Corey Brooks, of the New Beginnings Church of Chicago, has invited all of the 2016 Republican presidential candidates to speak to his congregation. Pastor Brooks joins us now from our studios in Chicago. Thanks so much for being with us.

COREY BROOKS: Glad to be on your show.

SIMON: Pastor, why have you made this appeal to Republicans?

BROOKS: Well, for far too long, Democrats have taken advantage of our community and just always felt as if we're just going to be there for them without having to do the things that are necessary in our community. The Republican Party has overlooked this, simply because they thought that - out of tradition and out of culture

***

Exactly. They’ve got the race card ready to flip out if they don’t hear the words “free stuff!” Just like the latinos, it’s part of their DNA to vote Dumocrap.

The good pastor is just using this opportunity to extort some more benefits from Dems.

I think it would be a great opportunity. I would like to see a serious candidate (not a patronizing fool) explain how conservative values will help the community.
Pastor Brooks seems sincere. School choice would be a great place to start. I think illegal immigration and amnesty would also be a great topics. It must be incredible frustrating to see BOTH parties falling over themselves trying to get votes for people that aren't even citizens yet.

Every single R candidate should take up this man on his invite. I most certainly would.

And what would I say?

Well I’d talk about how blacks traditionally supported Rs, I’d talk about the first black federal representatives who were elected during reconstruction. I’d lay it on REAL THICK about the anti-black history of the Dem party.

And then I’d move on to today’s issues. SCHOOL CHOICE. BROKEN FAMILIES. ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY. TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE. ENFORCEMENT OF IMMIGRATION LAWS.

There are plenty off issues here to make headway with.

As one of my local tea partiers pointed out you don’t have to win all, or even most, of black voters, but if you can be more competitive that would make a difference.

And school choice is so, so important and it’s a win, win because the unionize public school teachers have done more damage in this country over the past several decades than any other single thing. They need to go away.

They soundly rejected our message. Why do we even bother reaching out to them?

It’s probably a complete waste of time for conservatives to pander to them. All they want is FreeStuff™, paid for by you and me.

But, if any (negro) man hath an ear, let him hear.

The Republican Party has overlooked this, simply because they thought that - out of tradition and out of culture...

The pastor demonstrates the exact reason why no Republican should take him up on his offer. Republicans have always tried to treat all Americans as equals. They opposed slavery. They opposed Jim Crow. They supported the 1964 Civil Rights Act in larger numbers and larger percentages than Democrats. (The most vocal opponent was Sen Albert Arnold Gore Sr (D-TN), by the way.) They oppose Affirmative Action. They do not seek to offer special grants and privileges to blacks in order to gain votes. They want to do what is best for America...

Well, they used to, anyway... and I hope they will regain the strength to do so... and coming to your congregation to beg for more than 7 percent of the black vote would just make things worse, not better. Either we are all Americans, and we need representatives who do what is best for the nation as a while (and not for special interest groups)... or else we shall continue to fracture and fall. Your choice, Pastor.

I have talked with non affluent black people and they resent being pushed farther back by the illegal latino immigrants. However, they keep voting democrat. Go figure.

It would be like shooting fish in a barrel. From Bull Conners to Hillary Clinton and her FAKE black accent, the Democratic Party has done more damage to the black family than the KKK could ever imagine

Cut the Democrat vote in the black community from 93/7 to 80/20 and they'll never win another election.

Thanks!

This sounds like a STUNT...try to appear reasonable and reachable, and then, at the last minute, pull back and follow the slave masters (i.e., Democrat leadership).

Doing so could cause the Republicans to do DUMB THINGS, thinking they can reach these people, as in acting like Rand Paul and reversing support for Voter ID and agree with Paul that emptying the prisons of felons will create a ‘more equitable’ society.

Don’t take the bait!

Long ago I came to the conclusion that one
of the main differences between the GOP and
the Rats is that Republicans will look at a
person and see an individual with personal an
family concerns while Democrats look at a
person and see a group of like colored and cultured
people all with the same issues and concerns. The
Rats see various ant farms while Republicans see one
big American community made up of individuals. It
is pretty difficult to convince people to look at
things differently when they have long been conditioned
in the dubious art of group think.

Oh please. You are very very naïve. Someone wrote that this is nothing more than an attempt to extort more from the democrats. And that is exactly correct. Wake up. I know plenty of black people who are upset about the immigration, but vote democrat and always will.

Blacks are incredibly conspiratorial in nature and believe the worst about repubs. I don't mean ponder - I mean deeply believe repubs want the very worst for them and then some. Nothing will change their mind and they will continue voting close to 100% democrat. Wake up! Wake up!

Even though I think for a candidate this is lose-lose; damned if you do damned if you don’t proposition they should at least try, the liberal socialist plantation and those who dwell there are much like suffers of Stockholm Syndrome if they are truthful and not pander they may make a dent, I think Cruz is up to the task.

I listen to a lot of "urban" talk radio and I know of what you speak BUT there is a growing resentment towards white liberals. I don't think after 8 years of the Obama economy they are going to be excited for Hillary.
Most of the conspiracy BS comes from plain ignorance. That is why any Republican would have to speak candidly to debunk all of the mis-information. Connecting the failures in the educational system with Teachers Union and out of touch liberals would be a great place to start.

In many conservatives people's minds this is a lesson in futility...it might be, but you have to start somewhere...!

Every GOP candidate would be a fool not to have a chance to speak to 12 % of the population as this would get lot's of news coverage...and God forbid they might change a few peoples minds...

When they are polled you will get the typical answer...You know blacks vote in secret too...!

“However, they keep voting democrat.”

This reply will directly reference your screen name.

These are truly LOW INFORMATION voters, and the media for one is intent on keeping them that way.

I would bet a dollar to a doughnut that many, many black people would be shocked (shocked!) to learn that the first black congressmen and senators were elected as Rs during Reconstruction.

Look, I don’t know, maybe most of them would just blow it off as being irrelevant to their lives today, but I struggle with struggling all the time. Do we keep struggling or do we just throw up our hands?

What liberalism has done to blacks since the 1960s is a disgrace, it’s not good for blacks, it’s not good for our nation, it is just b.a.d.

And now the schtick is “black lives matter”? What black lives? It seems only the lives of thugs and petty criminals, not, for example, the gal who was raped and murdered in Baltimore recently. A black girl, brutally murdered by two black criminals. I’d like to think that someone beyond her immediate family and the cops and DA would care about that.

There have to be, HAVE TO BE, black people who are looking for a better message. Because if there are not, well, then things are far worse than we’ve even thought.
