A GOP-controlled Senate panel on Wednesday blocked President Barack Obama's request for $50 million to pay for legal help for unaccompanied immigrant children coming to the United States after fleeing violence in Central America.
The lawmaker responsible for the move was Republican Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama, chief author of a spending bill funding the Justice Department's budget. The spending measure, however, has a long way to go before becoming law.
Without lawyers, children are much more likely to be sent back to their home countries. Under federal law, immigrant children have two options to seek legal status, including requesting asylum for fear of returning home to face gang violence.
Without legal help, the maze of documentation and legal requirements is far more difficult for a child to maneuver.
Republicans opposed to people who are in the United States illegally have greater priorities in the $51 billion measure, which also funds the Commerce Department and science-related agencies such as NASA.

Because we don't have any gang violence in the USA?
A glimmer of hope, until that 5 billion lost in Hillery’s State Dept. is miraculously found and put to use.
Most of these “children” are 17 to 19 year old gang members being smuggled across by coyotes to serve as anchors to permit all of their relatives to come over.
The American taxpayers should not be paying for “lawyers” for these thieving bass turds. If they want a “lawyer”, they can pay for one like AMERICANS do.
Then there are the queers who apply for asylum because their home country is mean to perverts. Just in case we have a queer shortage, I guess.
Soros, Hoyer and Hitlery should pay for their kids, i.e., future communists and criminals.
That's the point. Going home is not a penalty. If they were actually arrested and CHARGED with a violation of 8 USC 1325, then they would be provided a public defender for the criminal trial.
But a deportation proceeding is not a criminal trial. It's merely a process to establish if you are in the country illegally, if there's any credible reason why you should stay, and how soon you might be going home if don't have a good reason.
The administration doesn't have the right to spend unallocated money to keep future Democrats in the country.
Fleeing violence in Central America? How much is being put up to flee the b on b violence in Baltimore?
If they’re citizens of Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, etc, etc, etc, let their own governments provide them with legal counsel.
“Without lawyers, children are much more likely to be sent back to their home countries”...
Duh! That is what most of us have been trying to tell the senators and representatives that we want-for them-kids and all-to be sent home-NOW-because they are mojados-here illegally-if cutting off money to help them is what it takes to get them gone, then go for it...
Obama will do it anyways
I think I read somewhere that it’s unconstitutional to fund this kind of defense from the treasury. Not that the constitution means anything.
Yeah, I think that’s pretty funny. The illegals have turned the East side of our town into little Mexico. Every single night on the news there are stories of shootings, etc. They’ve made it soooooo safe. lol
