The Dallas-area police officer criticized for aggressively handling teenagers at a pool party, shown in a viral video, has gone into hiding and "apologizes to all who were offended," his attorney said Wednesday..

McKinney Police Cpl. Eric Casebolt had been emotionally unsettled by two suicide calls he had handled shortly before responding to calls of trespassing and assault at a raucous pool party Friday evening, his police union attorney, Jane Bishkin of Dallas, told reporters in a televised news conference.

In the first suicide call, a man had shot and killed himself in front of his children and his family, and Casebolt consoled the man's wife while securing the body and the scene, said Bishkin, who said that the dead man was African American.

In the second suicide call, Casebolt had to calm a teenage girl who was threatening to jump off her parents' roof, and she was safely taken to a hospital, Bishkin said.

“Eric’s compassion during these two incidents are a testament to his character," Bishkin said. “The nature of these two suicide calls took an emotional toll an Eric Casebolt."

At the rate things are going, the cops will be calling the suicide help line themselves.

I hated them, but not as bad as going to a parent’s house late at night to tell them little Johnny or Susie teenager was killed in a wreck, I hated those.

That girl was acting wild. So were her boyfriends. They better have done a drug screen on them.

Her calm demeanor later on interview suggests to me coaching. No doubt there are lawyers all over this.

The cop should have waited for backup? I don’t know.

Why would he apologize? We’ve been assured by many Freepers that he did nothing wrong. In fact, he’s a hero for what he did.

Now that the cop himself has apologized for the way he acted, I hope this issue will die.

We probably need to take into account that an officer who has had to deal with two suicide calls in one day might not need to be responding to another incident where he would need to retain his composure.

No doubt there are lawyers all over this.

You mean like the police union lawyer quoted above?

I'm curious why his time with the Texas Highway Patrol was so short.

I’m not necessarily on the cops’ side on this. I just hate to see this kind of wild behavior rewarded with the media, and apologies.

The cop may have been 100 percent wrong. I don’t know. A cop’s abuse of power cannot be accepted.

Butt those kids were not 100 per cent right.

I agree 100%. The kids were clearly not 100 percent right. Many (if not all) of them had no right to be there, and they deserved to have the police called on them to come and boot them from the area.

But, at the same time, that does not mean that the officer was justified in behaving as he did. The other 11 officers at the scene handled the situation very well, but the officer who resigned did not.

Assuming the lawyer’s statement about the two suicide calls is accurate (and I have no reason to think it’s not), I sympathize with the officer. Two emotionally-draining calls, and then he’s thrust into a difficult, tense crowd situation? That’s a tough, tough day for any officer. But part of the (extremely difficult) job of being a police officer is maintaining composure—even in very difficult situations, and even on very tough days. He did not do that. I hope this is a learning experience for him.

What Law enforcement agency would touch a tainted cop? Nah, his career is probably ruined. He should have made them fire him, but they probably threatened him with prosecution if he didn't resign "voluntarily."

The only opinion I hold in any esteem on this whole matter is the opinion of the residents who stand by their officer.

All the rest can swirl the porcelain for all I care...
