Bratton: Crime Surge Not a Return to NYC’s ‘Bad Old Days’
New York Post ^ | June 9, 2015 | Bill Bratton

Posted on 06/09/2015 12:32:00 AM PDT by nickcarraway

It’s time for a sense of proportion about the increase in shootings and murders in New York City in the first five months of 2015.

While it’s true that both categories have risen over last year’s low numbers, the increase is not a harbinger of collapsing law enforcement or crime raging out of control, as some local columnists would have it. Nor is it evidence that the steep decrease over the past four years in reasonable-suspicion stops — or “stop-and-frisks,” as they’re colloquially known — has caused the increase in shootings.

Would it be good if the police commissioner came out and incited panic?

New Yorkers will now be forced to illegally arm themselves, a good thing for the 2nd amendment.

Wait and watch it happen.

Of course he’s going to say that. Mayor DeBlasio’s gotta keep the sheep quiet for as long as possible.

Then, when the GOP has the White House and Congress, the truth will come out that - Surprise! These ARE the bad old days! But the difference is DeBlasio/Bratton can blame it on the Republicans for years to come.

And Noo Yawkas will believe every word of it.

Yesterday an older white woman showed a reporter her Mace, which isn’t much but was surprising considering it is illegal in NYC.

New Yorkers do tend to blame Hizzoner and not the President during high crime times. We don’t believe everything.

Mayor Di Blasio stated that ordinary people have nothing to worry about, that all the murders are among gangs of blacks in slum areas.

I’m really surprised he openly said that. Black lives matter? Not if you’re rich and a liberal, I suppose.

He is right, the crime rate is still VERY LOW in New York. Just by population ratio, a person is now 14 times more likely to be murdered in Baltimore than New York (maybe 20 times, if you look at May’s murder rate in Baltimore).

If you just stay in Manhattan, the murder rate is incredibly low, beating out half of the states in this country (and Manhattan still includes Harlem).

...to liberals that is a cause of SHAME, so they are doing their best to up those rates in New York. Hopefully the people there wise up a bit before they again start counting bodies by the dozen every weekend.

NY’ers may not ‘believe everything’, but I know from living and working in Manhattan for 15 years that Democrats/liberals get an almost exclusive pass from the local media (ex NYPost; WABC talk radio) and the vast majority of locals and communters (CT and NoNJ aren’t exactly bastions of conservatism).

Your social circle and business associates may be objective and rational thinkers , but my own experience with NYC says otherwise.

You’ve never heard - in 15 years - New Yorkers grumble?

as one who has to walk around bum feces and urine in penn station, and watch out to make sure no bum pushes me off the subway platform, i can assure you it has returned to the bad old days when aggressive bums are harassing people for dope money and sprawl out all over the stations and pavements.... its back to worse than dinkins...... ITS URINE CITY and the abandonment fo STOP AND FRISK has led to the increased crime and murder rate... THIS SI WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU HAVE A COMMIE LIBTARD MAYOR.... DE BLOBIO A POS...

Sure - complaining is a way of life in the Big Apple. But ‘grumbling’ is not the same as laying blame. Especially come election time.

Dinkins never got a second term. DeBlasio needs to turn this around quick. Either that, or fail upwards as our new President.

First all, I was referring to national politics. If you recall my original post, I said that once the GOP wins the WH and Congress in ‘16, the ‘bad old days’ will have been revealed as the new bad old days and the local politicians and media will happily spew the propaganda that it’s all their fault.

I said nothing about local elections, although the fact that DeBlasio could even come close to winning an election says volumes about the NYC electorate right there. Especially after 9/11.

You seem to be debating a point I never made. If you want to believe New Yorkers will ultimately blame liberalism or socialism or illegal immigration or Marxist Democratic politicians when the crime wave goes out of control, then fine. Maybe you’re right. I happen to disagree.

Have a nice day.

Why are you so angry? I never said they’d blame liberalism. I said they’d blame the mayor as an individual. The problem with NYC is that the Republican party in the state is decimated and corrupt and so can never put up decent candidates. And the other choices that NYers had after Bloomberg was a sex fiend and an alcoholic lesbian. No normal person wanted to run for the mayoralty. Have a nice day and a tip o’ the hat to you.
