Former Rep. Baron Hill (D-Ind.) on Wednesday became the first Democrat to enter the race to replace retiring Sen. Dan Coats (R-Ind.) in Indiana.
In a statement posted on Medium, Hill played up his blue-collar roots and deep ties to the Hoosier State. He struck a populist tone in vowing to be a fighter for the Middle Class against the moneyed interests he said control Washington.
We can either put our heads in the sand, or we can fight to restore the American Dream, the middle class, and whats great about Indiana, Hill said. I know we can do better, and I believe we can build an economy where everyone has the chance to succeed. Thats what Ill fight for as a Senator representing Indiana.
Hill has twice served in the House representing Indianas 9th District. He served two terms in the early 2000s, before losing his reelection bid in 2004. He returned for two terms in 2006, but in 2010, lost to current Rep. Todd Young (R-Ind.), who is also considering running for Senate.
He is the first Democrat in a race that already includes two Republicans.
Conservative Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-Ind.) will be seeking to rally the conservative base in Indiana, as he goes up against former Coats chief of staff Eric Holcomb, who is considered a more establishment-friendly candidate.
Indiana is a must-win state for Republicans if they hope to hold on to their newly won majority in the Senate. Republicans will be favored going into the race, even in a presidential election year, when turnout could be more favorable for Democrats.

I don’t rule out losing this race, though I can’t imagine Marlin Stutzman making the same mistakes that Richard Mourdock did. I also couldn’t imagine Mourdock making the mistakes he did, so who knows? I’m optimistic, but not entirely confident of holding this seat.
No Democrat can be for the “middle class” or “working class” as their whole program under Obama has been to destroy both. Just ask the blue-collar workers in the United Mineworkers union, those in energy plants, and agricultural workers.
This guy should be honest and just run as a Marxist. If he won, he’d find a lot of company in Congress and the White House.

Let’s see if Indiana pads McConnell’s Dim-wannabe team by sending a big government Republican or instead will send Stutzman, who was one of the few in the House willing to vote against the Orange One for Speaker.
Come on, Indiana—the choice is clear.
Mourdock. Ummm...ummm.ummmmmm...
Very true, SharpRightTurn. Are you from Indiana?

No, not a Hoosier; just trying to see how the races shape up and hope we get several strong conservative choices.
