A 2011 study at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden produced the most illuminating results yet regarding the transgendered, evidence that should give advocates pause. The long-term studyup to 30 yearsfollowed 324 people who had sex-reassignment surgery. The study revealed that beginning about 10 years after having the surgery, the transgendered began to experience increasing mental difficulties. Most shockingly, their suicide mortality rose almost 20-fold above the comparable nontransgender population.

No form of surgery comes close to a 20x increased rate of post-operation suicide.
If people truly care about the welfare of people like Bruce Jenner, they should care.
Life is full of choices.
Some choices are good, and some aren’t so good.
Other choices... well, they’re REALLY not so good. Irrepairable, actually.
If having your private parts mutilated by sharp knives is the Answer ...
What on Earth is the question???
In the coming years Bruce is going to crash and burn big time. Even now when he looks at that ridiculous Vanity Fair cover he has to find the reality depressing. He looks nothing like “her”. Without the professional makeup, airbrushing, photoshopping and Annie Leibowitz photography, he looks like a 65 year-old woman, at best. More like a 65 year old man trying to look like a women.
As Bruce descends into total darkness his hoards of sycophants will have moved on to the next cause celebre.
They had to deal with roughly 60 % of the clients wanting to be changed back after a few years !
I think they stopped performing the procedure.
Boy the waiting room was like the Star Wars Outlaw Bar scene ..
Correlation is not causality. I doubt it’s the surgery that makes them suicidal. It’s the false hope that surgery represents to deluded, psychologically fragile individuals. When they maim themselves and their lives do not morph into earthly paradises like they expected, they can’t face the reality and take an eighth-story exit.
This why historically psychiatry advocated not catering to delusions held by patients.
That is, until the APA was hijacked by activists who intimidated people for saying the obvious.
Then there’s this......
A man he works from sun to sun
But a woman’s work is never done
Giving up the good life for one of unending toil might be off putting
Good.

Yes. But the statistics prove that surgery doesn’t improve their situation.
I doubt very much that those who try to treat the underlying mental illness have the same rate of suicide.
Exactly.
The proper control is not the non-transgendered population, but the transgendered who did not get re-assignment surgery.
If the non-surgery transgender group has a suicide rate 50x the population at large, then the surgery would be pretty successful in psychological terms.
If it had a suicide rate 10x the population, no, not so much.
Not that long ago plastic surgeons would not do a procedure on a patient who had unreasonable expectations. Certainly not on somebody who thought it was going to solve their problems. Ah, the good old days.
The PROBLEM is that the VAST MAJORITY never get Mr. Winkie cut off. It is a tiny minority that take the drastic step of removing a man’s best friend.
It is the realization of the permanent condition that causes the suicide.
The men who get breast implants can have them removed, if they wish and go back to a male physique.
But once you remove Mr. Winkie.....it is all over.
The bottom line is that not all of these people are the same....like our founders realized, we are all individuals.
The vast majority of these people are just gay men who find it is easier to attract other men for sex if they dress or look like women.
So, they get the implants, collagen, maybe take some hormone therapy....but they never cut off their play toy!
Thank you, Alice B. Toklas.
Exactly.
There is another important point regarding causality/correlation when it is brought up by advocates of sex-change surgery. If they argue that the suicides are related to pre-existing mental illness or distress, then they are admitting that those who choose surgery are either mentally ill or under mental duress.
This contradicts their contention that gender identity disorder isn't disordered.
I suppose they'd answer that this mental distress is caused by cultural rejection. But even granting that premise, surgery results in such a high risk of post-op suicide that social rejection is preferable.
In actuality, these people don't face public ridicule. Jenner is being widely hailed.
