BEIRUT: Al-Qaeda’s Syria wing Nusra Front said members of the Alawite minority sect should renounce President Bashar Assad and change their beliefs in order to be safe, the group’s leader said in footage broadcast Wednesday.
“If they drop weapons, disavow Assad, do not send their men to fight for him and return to Islam then they are our brothers,” Abu Mohammad al-Golani told Al-Jazeera TV in a rare interview.
Golani said Alawites were part of a sect that had “moved outside the religion of God and of Islam. We will continue our focus on Damascus and on toppling this regime,” he added. “I assure you, Assad’s fall won’t take a long time.” He said his Sunni militant group was not at war with Christians.

If you are a minority in the mid east, you either rule with an iron fist, or the majority will wipe you out.
So he had no choice but to crack down hard on the protestors back in '11.
And they're still protesting. They've protested all their way to Ramadi and Mosul as well.
If ISIS prevails, the entire population of Alawites that initially survive will be murdered or driven out of Syria...along with the Christians and other religious minorities who have been protected and respected in Syria.

Am not surprised. Being an apostate or a heretic in islam is much worse than being an infidel, who can be enticed or forced to convert to islam or pay penalty (tax), etc.. Alawites are considered heretics by sunnis and only way to deal with them is to kill them.
Golani is lying about christians. At best he doesn’t see them as a serious threat in that part of the world. Because on their own they’re insignificant and only can make a difference if allied with another grp such as Alawites. So he is taking the approach of ‘divide & conquer’.
The only topic on which I support Putin is when he supports the Christians in the Middle East -- he does this not for any Christian love but for realpolitik purposes, however, he DOES stuff that can help them -- for instance in keeping the dictator Assad in power
This Alawite Assad (and btw, the Alawis with their belief in a Trinity etc are not really Moslems and most Moslems say that) protects Christians for his own purpose and so did Saddam -- these dictators are or were evil men but they were a lesser evil to Christians than the jihadis who are their alternative.
Correct. First kill the Alawites then the Shia then the Christians.
