One in five Americans received monthly assistance from at least one of a variety of government programs throughout 2012, a report issued Thursday by the Census Bureau says.
The report estimated that 52.2 million Americans -- or 21.3 percent of the people in the United States -- received assistance each month during 2012.
Also from the report:
- 39.2% of children received some type of means-tested benefit.
- 41.6% of black Americans received assistance in an average month, versus 36.4% of the Hispanics, 17.8% of the Asians or Pacific Islanders, and 13.2% of whites.
- 50% of the female-led households received assistance, versus 29.5% for male-led households and 14.7% for married couples.

Not all of that 1-in-5 are actually Americans.
Yes, we need comprehensive immigration reform. If that reform does not include securing our borders, particularly our southern border, then ANY reform is like urinating in the ocean trying to change the tide.
I wonder if they count Unemployment benefits as public assistance? It’s not the same thing as straight up welfare.
This was in 2012. With Obamacare signing up Medicaid it’s got to be much higher now.
People who are net recipients of government benefits shouldn’t be allowed to vote for Senators. One house of the two parts of Congress should exclusively represent the interest of the people who pay the freight in this country.
