Tucked away in the pages of a new report by the U.S. General Accounting Office is a startling statistic: 40.4% of the U.S. workforce is now made up of contingent workersthat is, people who dont have what we traditionally consider secure jobs.
There is currently a lot of debate about how contingent workers should be defined. To arrive at the 40.4 %, which the workforce reached in 2010, the report counts the following types of workers as having the alternative work arrangements considered contingent. (The government did some rounding to arrive at its final number, so the numbers below add up to 40.2%). Agency temps: (1.3%) On-call workers (people called to work when needed): (3.5%) Contract company workers (3.0%) Independent contractors who provide a product or service and find their own customers (12.9%) Self-employed workers such as shop and restaurant owners, etc. (3.3%) Standard part-time workers (16.2%).
In contrast, in 2005, 30.6% of workers were contingent. The biggest growth has been among people with part time jobs. They made up just 11.9% of the labor force in 2005. That means there was a 36% increase in just five years.

I suspect that ALL workers who are not employed by government entities have “contingent” jobs.
I have always felt so, do not perform or company needs change you are history.
Read my mind.
IMHO (and someone will be here in 3, 2, 1...to dispute it, LOL!) all of us NEED to have multiple streams of income.

This is just creating a larger pool of voters likely to pull the lever for Big Government. Either create a stable government job for me, or punish my cheap-arse employer.
Hate to say it, but that’s how the great unwashed will see it.
Get the government out of the way of American business.
“The business of America is business.”
Not providing government jobs.
It’s a competitive world. Don’t hamstring American companies.
Nobody is advocating poisoning our environment or chaining employees to machines.
We had a War On Poverty, how about a Peace With Business?
Every government employee feels like he/she has to do something to justify their job and increase taxes/fines. Knock it off.
Free American businesses so they can hire employees away from the government. I don’t want to lay off a bunch of government employees and have them go on welfare. That doesn’t solve a damn thing. Give them a private sector job to go to.
And screw the socialists and Chinese and Russians and Germans who want to destroy us. Including the ones on Free Republic.
We can work them into the dirt if our government would just be pro-business instead of pro-socialism.
Unintended consequences once again strike short-sighted liberals and innocent conservatives alike.
Jobs? Who needs jobs? We have printing presses.
Just-In-Time Employment is coming.
How is that economic boom working out?
>>Just-In-Time Employment is coming.
Yep. JIT employment and a government basic living stipend for all. Wall St is licking their chops for an America like that. Capitalism for the elites and socialism for the masses.
You’re not wrong, but I would be a bit more strict about it.
If you’re part time and they can send you home early, you’re contingent.
If you’re part time and you don’t know from week to week how many hours you’re going to get, you’re contingent.
