A Texas college student filed suit against her school this week, saying her constitutional rights were violated when she was shooed off the quad for displaying a pro-Second Amendment sign.
Nicole Sanders, 24, who attends Blinn College, a two-year public college in Brenham, Texas, said she and a classmate at the 18,000-student school were holding signs near the student center in February when they were told to move. Sanders' sign read, Defend Gun Rights on Campus, and the other said LOL, with President Obamas logo as the O. The pair was trying to attract members for a student group they were forming, a chapter of Young Americans for Liberty.
Sanders claims a college official accompanied by three armed campus police officers approached and said someone had complained that their display was offensive and that they wouldnt be allowed to do it again unless they got special permission. According to Sanders, the official added that it was unlikely such permission would be granted to advocate for gun rights.

"Freedom of Speech" Bitches! Do you speak it?
Incredible. They literally banned free political speech, based on the message.
I wonder if the school will be stupid enough to now go the route of saying her presence is threatening and suspend her pending one of those nonjudicial hearings where the student is not allowed to have an attorney or confront their accusers? Those types of proceedings also need to be confronted in court and stopped.
It’s the Bill of Rights, doncha know. It’s bigoted.
Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE)... a worthwhile organization, IMHO.
If they were carrying signs against gun rights, they’d be patted on the back. Sad times in Texas these days.
Blinn is the local college right next to A&M. WTH?
A few comments from an old lawyer:
First Amendment protections are there to protect the “utterers” of speech we find offensive, not just the speech itself. Words do not have rights. People do.
There are certain restrictions on speech, (FIACT, Fraud, Violent overthrow of USG, etc) but none apply here.
The people’s rights were clearly violated here. They were harassed by police in an illegal police action, they were embarrassed in public, a reasonable person watching this could reasonably assume they were doing something illegal and therefore had to stop, etc.
The officers and those directing them to take the illegal action are all liable.

Hmm. Was she standing in the pre-approved “free-speech zone?”
So I take it if christian students are offended by an I’m Special Group on campus and they complain will the school kick the “special ones” off the property? I think not!
The new dean of the A&M law school is a notorious anti-gun lefty... how far the aggies have fallen...almost as far as UT.
Very sad.
that student should get a friend to carry a sign advocating the banning of civilian right to bare arms then get a friendly professor if they can find one to call security and try to have that message thrown off campus. if there is a way to have the complaint formal ie written that way there is a paper trail it would be even better. after this is done use it as evidence against the school.
“right to bare arms”
OK You got me.
Then again, I remember reading a college paper from someone, who was serious, writing his heart out about cereal killers. People were looking seriously at me, too. I had to be serious. My eyes about bled, as did my lip.
I like it.
