Indonesia is indeed a majority Muslim country, but one with substantial Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, and animist minorities. The province of Aceh is the only part of Indonesia where Muslims have gained a stranglehold on power and it is the most backward part of the county and is now destined to stay that way. Bali Province, on the other hand is predominantly Hindu with significant Christian, Buddhist and Muslim minorities.
Indonesia's national government is staunchly secular with a state ideology known as Pancasila, and for several years now has maintained a steady, stable democratic tradition of elections and peaceful transitions of power through several election cycles.
Your apparent tarring of Indonesia as totalitarian is very wide of the mark and demonstrates a lack of knowledge of the region.
I don't feel compelled to always "take sides". I would not side with either of them. :-)
