The federal government claims that it can tax individuals who earn their income outside the country. What is the difference?

The Marxistland left is likely livid over this. (And more broke.)

Funny how not be government considers people keeping their money as “costing” them something.

“The ruling means that Maryland taxpayers who tried to claim the credit on their county income tax returns between 2006 and 2014 are likely to be eligible for refunds that the state Comptroller’s office says could total $200 million with interest. “

Holy, that’s a lot for refunds and it was a stupid law anyways.

It is not costing Maryland. They were not entitled to it in the first place.

The US taxes US citizens who work abroad! On top of foreign taxes to boot. And even if you renounce your citizenship, the IRS will still come after you.

Wonder who planted this story?

“The Wynnes and their attorneys contended that this represented about $25,000 in illegal double taxation.”

If the government was really for the people, this would
never happen. The fact is, liberalism has turned all of
the northeastern communist block into a governmental
criminal enterprise with the Obama administration as their
example guideline. I wonder if the Wynnes voted for the
Obama?

Unlike the federal IRS which taxes money earned and taxed off shore should anyone be so foolish as to want to bring it home to America...

Escaping Minnesota winters is one thing; escaping Minnesota’s income tax rate is quite another. For those who don’t understand the rules, it’s relatively easy to unintentionally break the law.
If a person is present in the state for fewer than 183 days, Minnesota uses a set of 26 regulatory factors to determine whether he or she qualifies as a resident.

”… the state’s practice of withholding a credit on the county segment of the state income tax violated the Commerce Clause because it might discourage individuals from doing business across state lines."

Beware of split Supreme Court decisions.

I don’t see where a state discouraging its citizens from conducting business with other states is a violation of the Commerce Clause.

What am I overlooking?

Maryland is a money grubbing whore, run by money grubbing whores.

Back in 2006 we sold our home in Florida and traveled for a couple of months until we found a state & town we liked and bought a home.

During those 2 months I had our mail forwarded to my brother in Germantown & he shipped it to us once a week or so.

Yeah, a year or two later the Peoples Republic of Maryland sent me a letter demanding state income tax for the year of 2006. They didn’t get it.

It’s 5-4, but an odd alliance of justices.

The 5 joining the opinion are Alito, Roberts, Sotomayor, Kennedy, Beyer. The 4 dissenters are Scalia, Thomas, Ginsburg and Kagan.
