Well, of course the engineer didn’t say anything about a projectile impact before the crash. But he’ll remembered such an impact after coaching by his lawyer.
This what is called a “lie paradox”.
On the one hand he is claiming that he remembers nothing about events leading up to and including the derailment. On the other, it has been suggested that he may have been hit by a projectile, or at least reported it.
The task at hand is to figure out from statements by him exactly when he “began to forget” about the accident.
Projectile came up when a conductor mentioned having heard reference to it on a radio call.

but a good criminal interagator will get the truth out of him especially if it’s proven that he was coherant and aware of what was going on from the black box data or communications between the dispatcher and the engineer right before the accident.
nd it will be why he jerked the steering wheel which threw the train off the tracks as he instinctively accelerated and added 50mph in 2.7 seconds....
