It has scared the heck out of ISIS from what I’ve read and rocked the vehicles they managed to steal.
But you said there are other jets that can take out tanks, so that’s good to know.

I know nothing of military strategy. Wouldn’t they be important in a local war, like between the Saudis and Iran? Weren’t they important in the Gulf War way back in the 90’s. I don’t know. I’m asking. Thanks in advance.

thanks. But if we are planning on getting rid of he A10, what will the new tank buster be?

Any number of weapon systems will destroy tanks - artillery, multiple launch rocket systems, other tanks, anti-tank rockets, helicopters. The one thing F-35's can do, and none of these other weapon systems - including the A-10 - can, is avoid detection by anti-aircraft systems while dropping a nuke on Chinese targets (presumably after US missile silos have either been emptied or destroyed by a Chinese first strike). And that is why F-35's have taken precedence over the A-10 for Air Force appropriations. Because in an age of nuclear munitions, neutralizing the enemy's nuclear arsenal or delivering nukes against enemy targets can mean the difference between winning and losing a war against a near-peer adversary.

Good Lord! Thanks for that very informative reply. Am I the only one on this board who is from up north and knows nothing of military weapons or strategy? :)

It’s kind of cool because I learn a ton more every day I am on FR.

Though Zvezda reported that Krylov’s design would be powered by a nuclear reactor, Polyakov said the version of the design to be shown in St. Petersburg will run on convention diesel fuel. The design could be tweaked to fit a nuclear system if necessary, he said.

....

Well, that’s not very impressive.

Tanks are about as far from being obsolete as any weapon system can be. Knocking out a tank is one thing. Stopping a combined arms Brigade that has its own drones, EW capabilities, AA capabilities, long range smart munitions, and over 100 tanks is a tough proposition.

Oh we do have a great military, even after 6 years of Barry tear down running it. It could have been better though. But it is still the top dog.

Fascinating. But what exactly are EW capabilities, AA capabilities, and long range smart munitions. I understand if the explanation would take too much time.

The A10 is very intimidating because:

1. It can fly very low and slow.

2. It is loud while egressing.

3. It has a massive gattling-style gun that can shred virtually anything including armor.

I am from upstate NY and used to backpack in the Adirondacks. Occasionally while I was walking through a quiet valley, an A10 out of Rome AFB would fly a few hundred feet overhead and startle the crap out of me.

Sounds like a Brutal weapon! wow. My sister worked in Rome as a teacher 35 years ago so I remember going up there as a kid. Nice area.
Like I said, ISIS is known to be terrified of it. Good.

The F-35 can’t do it either. None of the air-droppable nuclear munitions fits in the F-35’s weapons bay and they’re too heavy for its hardpoints.

Electronic Warfare units can jam enemy radio-controlled drones. Anti-aircraft units within the brigade can engage all types of aircraft. Excalibur is a smart round which can be fired from a 155mm artillery tube and via GPS guidance can land within ten meters of point target and it has a range of over 40 kilometers. Plus engineer capabilities, artillery-delivered minefields, Chem Corp vehicles, our own anti-tank missiles, and more of the team are part of a very capable brigade.

Good Lord. Sounds ferocious. How could any army stand up to that kind of assault?
Who could afford to put that together but the US?

Those billions of rubles squandered on the Olympics could have been put to use in building a new capable shipyard and drydock complex.
