Everyone knows that Congress has exempted itself from Obamacare so lawmakers and their staff can continue to receive employer-based subsides that Americans in a similar position would not be allowed to receive.
But there's a new twist here that you need to know about.
To secure its Obamacare exemption, the U.S. Senate had to submit documents stating that it was a small business with less than 50 employees.
This is, of course, completely false.
The Senate is a massive arm of the Federal government that is completely funded with tax dollars and that employs thousands of people across the country. It is not a small business and should not be exempt from Obamacare in any way.
U.S. Senator David Vitter (R-LA), chairman of the Senate Small Business Committee, recently sought to subpoena the Senate's documents to confirm exactly what was said to secure this exemption.
Unfortunately, several Republicans joined all of the Democrats on the committee to block Senator Vitter's effort to uncover the truth.
We think it's important for you to know about now for two primary reasons.
First, Senator Vitter is now being attacked by members of his own party for seeking answers on this issue. The GOP establishment recently went to POLITICO, their publication of choice, to criticize Vitter.
Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) called Vitter's effort "disingenuous" and Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) said that there are "more appropriate" uses of the committee.
We've seen this tactic used many times before. The GOP establishment thinks that if they humiliate their colleagues, they can get them to back down.
Please call Senator Vitter at (202) 224-4623 and encourage him to hold strong.
Second, according to an investigative report published by National Review Online (http://www.nationalreview.com/article/418055/how-five-republicans-let-congress-keep-its-fraudulent-obamacare-subsidies-Brendan), Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is pressuring senators to keep the documents from seeing the light of day.
It's bad enough that Senator McConnell has abandoned the fight to repeal Obamacare after promising to rip it out "root and branch." But now he's apparently trying to exempt himself from the law he refuses to fight.
And to make matters even worse, McConnell is leading many of his Republican colleagues into a political box canyon with no good way out.
Please call the Republican senators and urge them to stand with Senator Vitter in opposing the congressional exemption from Obamacare.
Here's a link to a full list of senators with their phone numbers.
And please remind them that they don't work for Senator McConnell and should not carry his water on this or any other issue.
Thank you for standing strong for freedom!
Sincerely, Ken Cuccinelli II President Senate Conservatives Fund
Notice they don't deny Vitter's assertions.
This was an email from the SCF sent out yesterday about the corruption that is the Republican Party. These guys are rotten to the core.
Corrupt and rotten they are. A lot of bad apples in the party that’s for sure.
GOP establishment is using Alinsky tactics to bully their Conservative colleagues. The Senators do not need subsidies from the American taxpayers. Like Bill Clinton, they are doing this simply ‘because they can’. Republicans acting like Democrats. Disgusting.
Did they exempt themselves or did they just get lavish taxpayer funded subsidies which cover the cost of the most extravagant "platinum" insurance plans under Obamacare? I thought it was the latter. This is why the pols always say people are lying when they claim they are exempted from Obamacare. They participate in obamacare they just don't have to pay for it.
“Notice they don’t deny Vitter’s assertions.”
Right, they’re just trying to divert attention.
Now why would this government be bothered by any law that they pass for the rest of the country? Don’t these very stupid people that aren’t in the political game realize that GOVERNMENT deserve a better “LEG UP” than the rest of us? What’s the matter with all you people? THE GOVERNMENT IS THE NEW “UPPER CRUST” AND DON’T ANY OF YOU FORGET THAT.
"But until Vitter got a green light from the Small Business Committee to subpoena the unredacted application from the District of Columbia health exchange, it would be impossible to determine who in Congress gave it a stamp of approval. When Vitter asked Republicans on his committee to approve the subpoena, however, he was unexpectedly stonewalled.
That stonewalling centered around Rand Paul. Vitter needed ten votes from his Republicans on the committee but Rand Paul was against it. So when Vitter declared a public vote on the matter, McConnell got involved and got four other senators to completely switch their positions and vote no against the subpoena, to take the heat off of Rand Paul being the sole no vote."
Good additional angle to the story. Thanks. A pox on Rand for (no doubt) carrying McConnell’s water on this.
So, if their staffs qualify as a small business, I take it then they are filing the quarterly tax returns that small businesses are required to file and are also adhering to all the other regulations imposed on small businesses. I doubt it.
