Boatlift, An Untold Tale of 911 Resistance
YouTube ^

Posted on 05/13/2015 4:17:31 PM PDT by shove_it

Outstanding video clip received in an email today ...

We certainly were busy watching the news right after 9/11, but we never saw this......BOAT-LIFT OF 9/11.....

In the 14 years since this happened, this is the first time I've ever seen this...I don't even remember seeing/hearing about this evacuation on the news! The fact is, it was all done in 9 hours ... 500,000 people!

This is a video well worth watching. The guy at the end (same guy who is at the beginning) has some great words to live by for all of us.

I heard a little about this at the time. These people merit recognition for doing the right thing.

Wow, thank you! This was wonderful! Over half a million people rescued from being trapped in NYC on 9/11 by volunteer boat crews.....never knew that happened.

Excellent post thanks! I never knew this happened and that is sad. Americans doing what we need do to help.

The stories of the boatlift were published in the maritime press and of course all of the monthly union magazines.
The officers and crew members on the Staten Island Ferries, The New York Waterway Ferries, and the tugboats are all union members. So much for the many critics on the site of union members. They answered the call, just the merchant seaman answered the call for WWII, Korea, the Gulf Wars and so forht.

It is unfortunate. If a union member gets an extra 5 bucks an hour, its a horror of epic proportions. If some Chamber of Crony Capitalists contractor gets $500 mil due to his connections, its no big deal.

Thanks. Makes me proud to be a Kings Pointer, alumni of the sailing team, and a 20 year retiree from the US Merchant Marine.
.
The US Merchant Marine Academy, the smallest of the 5 federal academies, is the best kept secret for a great education.

It is also the only Federal Service Academy granted the right to carry a Regimental Battle Standard. 142 midshipmen gave their lives in during WW 2.

On a ship, I will always take a Kings Pointer over an Annapolis grad any time. Annapolis makes officers, Kings Point makes mariners.

The tag-line says it all!

‘I heard a little about this at the time. ‘

The reaction to 9-11 by the media and the elites is very disturbing comparing it to the reaction to Pearl Harbor. The many stories of real courage and in this case ordinary Americans rising to levels of extraordinary performance were either ignored or treated in such a cursory and uninformed manner that most other Americans never heard or understood the narrative. Instead, just as I might point out as with the press in Viet nam what was highlighted about 9-11 was bathos and weeping. Pictures of panicking civilians and sometimes first responders were recycled endlessly. No emphasis was ever put on this being an enemy attack on the American homeland.

Sadly people at the top seemed confused about how they should react in public. While the military prepared to do something for several weeks that something seemed mostly to focus on an almost panicky emphasis on extreme force protection measures that had the effect of making every one obsessed with over the top defensive thinking. The President did little to sound the toxin when he addressed the nation going out of his way to engage in the notorious Religion of Peace disquisition.

The left meanwhile was barely able to contain their glee at what had happened and obviously thought more such events would be useful for spreading demoralization and dismay and presenting them with a historic opportunity to gain power. They quickly began to maneuver to undermine any effective response to the attacks hiding their attitudes under an unctuous ‘yes but’ response to making real war on the jihadists enemy and heir enablers. One part of this campaign was to turn 9-11 into a narrative of death, destruction and victims not a sneak attack meriting a really crushing response. So stories such as this got shoved down the memory hole and what we say were endless images of weeping relatives, and those who could only wail ‘why us?’. That is the left, master of controlling the narrative and framing it with pictures selected to make the truth a lie.

I recall seeing a video tribute shortly after 911 about the boatlift. IIRC it was the largest boatlift since D-day or something.

I think that last is patently untrue. As a for-instance, many here have called for Jon Corzine’s head over his financial malfeasance in co-mingling funds at MF Global. I don’t think that is an isolated thing.

It is also the only Federal Service Academy granted the right to carry a Regimental Battle Standard. 142 midshipmen gave their lives in during WW 2.

Early years of WWII the highest casualty rates were in the merchant marine. Germaan U-boat activity in the North Atlantic was at its peak. Next up the 8th Army Air Force on bombing raids over occupied Europe. Late in the war the US Marines with the enormous casualties they suffered on Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

I had to watch some of it. Yes - your are right. Larger than the evacuation of Dunkirk (300,000 in six days). This was 500,000 in nine hours. (Although I’m guessing the East River isn’t anything like the English Channel!).

Really is a touching video with the raw memories of everyday people doing extraordinary things.

Those old Democrat union patriot mariners must be torn today over “what has happened to my party” now that it has been completely hijacked by the communist left. It seems like these guys and many others like them are futile folks for conversion to the Conservative message.
