Jeb Bush courts evangelicals, defends religion in public life

LYNCHBURG, VA. — Looking to win over skeptical evangelical voters, Jeb Bush pushed back Saturday against what he said are modern intrusions on religion as he lauded graduates and their families at Liberty University, a Christian college popular on the path to the Republican presidential nomination.

“Fashionable ideas and opinions – which these days can be a religion all by itself – have got a problem with Christians and their right of conscience,” Bush told an audience of 34,000 in the school’s football stadium.

“That makes it our problem, and the proper response is a forthright defense of the first freedom in our Constitution.”

Some evangelicals view Bush warily, questioning whether the former Florida governor and likely candidate for the Republican presidential nomination would provide a suitable bulwark against gay marriage, illegal immigration and other issues key to conservatives.

Bush did not mention gay marriage, but got some of his loudest applause when he said “wherever there is a child waiting to be born, we say choose life, and we say it with love.”

And the convert to Catholicism pledged that he would not apologize for allowing faith to influence his decision making.

Don’t know what Jeb did or didn’t do but i was HORRIFIED when i found out she wasn’t in a coma or brain dead. She was aware and understood who and what was around her.
And she was STARVED to death!!
i just assumed for the longest time she was a vegetable. It devastated me to think of her slowly starving and wondering why she wasn’t being fed.

Social Conservatives now find Jeb acceptable, but not their first choice.

Terry Schiavo

I watched part of his speech...

When he got to the “wherever there is a child waiting to be born, we say choose life, and we say it with love.”

Nothing says love like letting a person slowly for weeks starve to death and dehydrate to death...

He is a damn hypocrite...

I actually about lost my lunch he said that line...he's a sick uncaring bastard...

I have forgotten the details of this event, but tell me how you feel like you do about Jeb and Terry, and then this FTA:

“A lot of conservatives have forgotten Bush had a pretty conservative record,” Scheffler said, citing in particular Bush’s aggressive intervention to keep alive Terri Schiavo, a Florida woman in a persistent vegetative state who died in 2005 despite Bush signing a law that allowed authorities to re-insert her feeding tube.

Please refresh my memory and explain the discrepancy (not that I'd support Jeb anyway...)

It was very cruel indeed.

I find it hard to believe that “those people” were ignorant of her condition...i.e. ALIVE!

Jebbie was very very scared and hands off as far as Terry Sciavo.

Jebbie at the time was very scared of getting negative reaction to him being more supportive of The Schiavo family and their situation. If you have the free republic post from the time there would be no mistaking this
