This is what happens when the ruling party is named “Progressive Conservative” and they act accordingly.
The PC Party was crushed tonight in Alberta, with the libertarian Tea Party Whiterose now the official opposition party.
Having the NDP win in Alberta is like having the Socialists winning in Texas.
That’d coming soon.
Alberta wasn’t that conservative compared to American conservatism
With our current mass legal immigration policy - plus no enforcement of illegal immigration laws - the Socialist takeover of Texas is not too far off.
Whites - 44.0%
Hispanics - 38.4%
Blacks - 12.4%
A number of things have stalled the Socialist insurrection.
Texas whites have the highest voter eligibility, the highest turnout, and they vote close to 80% for Republican candidates.
Texas Blacks have lower voter eligibility (more children, and more felony convictions), and their turnout is lower than whites.
Texas Hispanics have much lower voter eligibility (the Census counts all Hispanics present in the state, including legal non-citizens and illegals), plus Hispanic turnout is lower than both Blacks and whites, and even lower in non-presidential elections.
Some people claim that Texas Hispanics are more Conservative than elsewhere. That may be true, especially in low turnout off year elections, or with popular local boys like GW Bush. In general, though, I think the data show that Texas Hispanics vote around 60%-65% for Democrats.
Since Hispanics are the fastest growing group in Texas, that number is not favorable for Conservatives.
You could fit Alberta small-c conservatives in a small arena and in political terms, you could count their numbers with two hands. Quite similar to any conservative movement in any country. Minuscule.
On top of that, Boehner and Mitch were in diapers when the PCs were purging conservatives from its ranks.
“Having the NDP win in Alberta is like having the Socialists winning in Texas.”
Came to this thread to say exactly that. Who knew Albertans had a death wish amidst their perennial prosperity?
Can they have already forgotten what the socialists did in their brief stint running Ontario?
They merged with the Canadian Alliance (formerly the Reform Party of Canada) to form the Conservative Party of Canada. Some of the old PCP loyalists didn't make the move, but most of them are gone now.
Out west in Alberta IIRC, most of the politicians and voters were with Reform -- the more conservative party that broke away from the Progressive Conservatives -- rather than statist "Red Tories" of Ontario and the Maritimes.
My guess is the idea that Albertans are conservative is and always was a myth.
