A Raleigh, N.C., police officer is suing Starbucks for $50,000 because he says he spilled a free coffee in his lap and burned himself.
WRAL-TV reports Lt. Matthew Kohr suffered burns, blisters and emotional damage after the spill in 2012., his lawyers told court Monday.
Kohr claims the lid popped off the coffee and the injuries he received aggravated his Crohn's disease. He says he had to undergo surgery to remove part of his intestine.
The suit also alleges Kohr's wife, Melanie, as a result of the burn, suffered a loss of "emotional support, her social companion and her intimate partner."
Starbucks lawyers told court Kohr isn't subject to the same warranty because it was a free coffee, according to WRAL-TV.
The allegations haven't been proven in court.
Jury selection is underway and testimony is scheduled to begin later this week, the report says.
Did a woman a few years ago not sue Dunkin Donuts too for the coffee being too hot when she split it or something?

$50,000? Why not $50 million? Starbucks turned the poor man’s life into a living hell. Thank heavens he didn’t order a caramel drink. It would have been like napalm.
If he was on duty he will be going for disability, that you can bet on.
I believe that was McDonalds, but there may have been a suit against Dunkin’ Donuts, too.
Next, he’ll sue Dunkin Donuts for making him fat.
Wait, Starbucks doesn’t have donuts, so this is impossible.

As an LEO in a previous life I can say I never took anything for free and have hated that “tradition”. I paid even if they insisted and then stopped going to that place.
I understand that late night stores/restaurants do it to have officers coming in as a robbery prevention presence, but I do not like the practice.

the Crohn’s part is a real stretch. How long before coffee spillers are suing for PSSD (Post Spillage Stress Disorder)?
Why anyone goes to Starbucks and gives their money to a left wing turd to promote their agenda is beyond me and DD’s has much better coffee too.
Also going in some of their places is like going into a freak college dorm sometimes.

I think there was an incident with a woman at a Mcdonalds years ago where she spilled her coffee all over herself and sued. I might be wrong but I am pretty sure she won that case and made off with a good amount of money. Although I will say that the coffee at Mcdonalds is lava hot even after its sat around for 20 minutes. I just wish a judge somewhere would look at these people, laugh in their face, then force them to pay court fees. Suing someone because you’re clumsy is the real American dream I guess.
Maybe it really wasn’t a ‘free’ cup. But instead a daily payoff for him to overlook various things going on there. :)

I look back to even a few weeks ago and think of the people I could have sued. No wonder I am poor, but at least I believe in self-responsibility and honesty .
