Critics blast UT’s Latino award to George P. Bush

In awarding its first-ever Latino Leadership Award, the University of Texas at Austin hoped to highlight its longtime work in establishing a Mexican-American studies center and department. It used the celebratory occasion, in fact, to announce a new Latino Research Initiative at UT.

But giving that inaugural prize to Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush — whose resume might read as thin as U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz’s on Latino issues — triggered criticism from Latino academics and activists on and off campus.

Bestowed by outgoing and embattled university President Bill Powers, the UT Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS), the brand-new Department of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies and the even newer research center, the choice spurred a campus protest last week organized by some of the center’s own founders and supporters.

It didn’t take long for Latino scholars, students and activists nationally to pile on, turning to Twitter, Facebook and Latino academic listserves to express disappointment and anger.

One critic simply asked, “What on earth is going on at CMAS?”

The criticism ranged from informed to visceral, suspicious and cynical. And all of it shifted focus away from the work of UT Latino academics.

Critics called Bush unqualified to receive the award because his work doesn’t reflect a commitment to Latino communities and issues.

They ought to be. But traitors aren’t necessarily highly regarded even among the people they are helping.

Or SecOState Shrillary’s `Outstanding Excellence in Achievement (with Ben Gazi Cluster), medal awarded to her by George III.

So she wasn’t disciplined for that debacle: the Uniparty gave her a fecking medal.

Bush went to the University of Texas where he earned a degree in Latin American affairs.

Studying Latin America, i.e. foreign relations and commerce with Latin American countries is one thing.

“Mexican-American” studies reminds me of “Black Studies.”
The creation of a department within the university for identity politics.
