Documents show the expensive tastes of Jeb Bush’s low-key wife

In 1999, Columba Bush, the famously private wife of then-Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, was detained and fined by federal customs officials for misrepresenting the amount of clothing and jewelry she had bought while on a solo five-day shopping spree in Paris.

The incident left the Florida first lady deeply mortified and her husband politically chagrined. Jeb Bush said the first lady had misled customs officials because she did not want him to know that she had spent about $19,000 on the trip.

“The embarrassment I felt made me ashamed to face my family and friends,” Columba Bush said in a July 1999 speech to the Central Florida Make-a-Wish Foundation, not long after the incident. “It was the worst feeling I’ve ever had in my life.”

The ordeal did not stop her from spending freely, however. Less than a year later, she took out a loan to buy $42,311.70 worth of jewelry on a single day, according to records filed with the state of Florida by Mayors Jewelers.

That purchase was part of a pattern by Columba Bush of borrowing to buy tens of thousands of dollars of jewelry at a time from the South Florida store over a 14-year period. Documentation available online, which does not include the details of two transactions made less than six weeks apart in 1995, shows that she spent a total of more than $90,000 at the store.

Now we know why Jeb wants to be president. Once he’s in his earning potential is virtually unlimited, as the Clintons have shown.

There's a parody here somewhere...

"O columbia the gem of the ocean..."

"O Columba, who loves gems and spending.."

Once this all gets out, she will prove to be a serious drag on Jeb. If they were democrats, it would not matter ala Michelle Obama. But, as a republican, Jeb will not be able to survive this. Just my opinion.

Folks, I’m not fan of the Bushes, but this article and one other are absolutely despicable.

If the WP had vetted Obama, I would accept this on the Bushes. It didn’t.

So here we have some information that folks should know about, but the WP is the last entity in the U. S. that should be telling us.

Where is the vetting of Barack Obama? The Post has been completely silent on his background, treachery, and acts of treason.

The Bushes, give m freakin’ break.

I’ll never vote for another Bush, but I’m willing to peg the Washington Post for what it is and is trying to do.

The Post is deathly afraid of Bush.

Frankly, so am I. The way ‘supposed’ Conservatives are lining up behind a known liar, Bush is certain to get the nomination.

It left her a little short.

Sounds like another “big time spender". But honestly, all the stuff they mentioned her buying over the past twenty years combined wouldn't pay for a half hours jet fuel for one of Mooch’ s Vacays.

Yeah, what difference does it make now, Washington Post?

That’s in the past.

You know, the same past the Clintons have, and have been forgiven on for decades.

I agree, but I really don’t care that she likes expensive jewelry etc. That’s her business.

And it’s none of the US government’s business how much money someone spends shopping in Paris either.

Sheesh

According to a Drudge headline, Jeb gave a speech in Puerto Rico today, in Spanish, and he endorsed P.R. statehood.

Great idea, Jeb.

Two new Democrat senators, four new Democrat congressmen, and six electoral votes for the Democrat nominee.

Who cares what she spends. Its her money. As long as they are not spending my money I couldn’t care less. And making a big deal out of how people spend their own money is what dems do, not conservatives.
