The Blue-City Model

The Blue-City Model

Baltimore shows how progressivism has failed urban America.

April 28, 2015

You’re not supposed to say this in polite company, but what went up in flames in Baltimore Monday night was not merely a senior center, small businesses and police cars. Burning down was also the blue-city model of urban governance.

Nothing excuses the violence of rampaging students or the failure of city officials to stop it before Maryland’s Governor called in the National Guard. But as order starts to return to the streets, and the usual political suspects lament the lack of economic prospects for the young men who rioted, let’s not forget who has run Baltimore and Maryland for nearly all of the last 40 years.

The men and women in charge have been Democrats, and their governing ideas are “progressive.” This model, with its reliance on government and public unions, has dominated urban America as once-vibrant cities such as Baltimore became shells of their former selves. In 1960 Baltimore was America’s sixth largest city with 940,000 people. It has since shed nearly a third of its population and today isn’t in the top 25.

The dysfunctions of the blue-city model are many, but the main failures are three: high crime, low economic growth and failing public schools that serve primarily as jobs programs for teachers and administrators rather than places of learning.

Let’s take them in order. The first and most important responsibility of any city government is to uphold law and order. When the streets are unsafe and crime is high, everything else—e.g., getting businesses to invest and create jobs—becomes next to impossible. What we are seeing is the culmination of 100 years of socialist treachery. And we all just went along with it.

We allowed the government to regulate the free market on the 1910s and 1920s. We stood by and cooperated with Social Security in the 1930s. In the 1940s, we taught the government it could use war as an excuse to ration goods, regulate production and even confiscate private property. In the 50s, we sat by as the federal government exceeded its authority by building a national network of roads (all the better for the armored cars to roll on during “emergencies”). Since the 60s has been in high gear with a HUGE explosion in welfare, along with Medicare and Medicaid - all of which was unconstitutional.

It’s time to BREAK FREE from all of that. Some of you say you just want back the money you paid in for Medicare and Social Security. But at the cost of your liberty? At the cost of continuing to violate the sacred U.S. Constitution?

Sorry, but the price for all these government “goodies” is TOO HIGH! End it all now, I say.

Baltimore Is a Democrat Problem, Not America’s Problem

by John Nolte 28 Apr 2015

Contrary to the emotional blackmail some leftists are attempting to peddle, Baltimore is not America’s problem or shame. That failed city is solely and completely a Democrat problem. Like many failed cities, Detroit comes to mind, and every city besieged recently by rioting, Democrats and their union pals have had carte blanche to inflict their ideas and policies on Baltimore since 1967, the last time there was a Republican Mayor.

States run by Republican governors boast highest economic growth rates
August 20, 2014, 12:38 PM ET

Are Republican governors better for a state’s economy? Fresh evidence offers some tantalizing clues.

Nine of the 10 fastest growing U.S. states in the fourth quarter of 2013 were controlled by Republicans governors, according to the most recently available data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The BLS on Wednesday released a state-by-state comparison of GDP growth.

Six of the 10 worst-performing states, on the other hand, were run by Democrats.

North Dakota, in the midst of a fracking oil-boom, led the way with 8.4% growth in the final three months of 2013. Rounding out the top five were West Virginia, Wyoming, Louisiana and Nevada.

Only West Virginia, one of the nation’s poorest states, has a Democratic governor among the top 10 states.

The reasons why some states grow faster than others, of course, are varied and complex and often beyond short-run or even long-term political control. The health of the broader U.S. economy also plays a huge factor.

Most of the top performers are in the South and Southwest, previously underdeveloped regions whose economies have been stoked in part by soaring population growth. Other states like North Dakota have benefited from the fortuitous exploitation of abundant raw materials, primarily oil and gas.

Many of the slowest growing states such as Massachusetts and New York, by contrast, are older and more settled. They are also wealthier than the national average, however, and have higher percentages of residents with college degrees.

Other explanations for the disparity in growth include the level of taxes and regulations. Taxes in the South are lower, there are fewer unions and states in the region are more lightly regulated. So businesses have been keen to set up shop.

Economic legacy is also something that cannot be overlooked. Mississippi has been dominated by Republicans for more than a decade, but the historically poor state has not kept up with most of its Southern brethren.

In any case, the Republican advantage does not appear to be a one-quarter quirk. States led by Republican governors have also fared better since the end of the Great Recession in mid-2009.

Seven of the 10 fastest growing states, including the top seven, were run by Republican governors for all or most of the period from 2010 to 2013.

North Dakota again was No. 1 at 16.7% growth. The state was followed by Texas (7.1%), South Dakota (6.3%), Nebraska (6.3%) and Utah (5.8%).

you sound like we really had a choice in any of this.....

our votes are meaningless...

the only change that voters like us have ever achieved is with Reagan, who truly had a vision and a pride in our country like no other...(and I voted for Carter the first time around!)

I felt safe under Dubya....

but his father, Clintoon, and now this obamination.....no safety, no pride, no economic boost....nothing....

The TRUTH has to come out now.

Maybe so but the LIV's won't or can't afford to believe it. They are hooked on Big Brother's largesse. Their futures were sealed the day they decided to nose up to the Federal trough.

The majority of Americans will not arrive at this conclusion. The majority of Americans are no longer capable of reason. The majority of Americans will believe who ever gets their talking points across first, loudest, and most often.

If the majority of American conclude it's government's fault, it's not progressive policies that are to blame, but that the policies were not progressive enough.

Wrong.

More and more Americans are coming to this very, very sad conclusion. It shows when people riot right out in front of a MLB baseball park causing ticket holding fans to get scared. It comes when companies refuse to rebuild burned out drug stores. It comes when folks realize that it is time to buy guns and ammo to protect themselves and their dear ones.

Americans are starting to “wake up and SMELL the coffee.”

Sadly, you are wrong.

They can see the same situation you do, they can admit it's a problem, but the solution they offer will be the complete opposite of your solution . . . or mine.

If you were to ask them, "what shall we do," you would be incredulous as to what they would recommend.

It has been said here before. Let the Democrat politicians police these neighborhoods and leave the good citizens alone.

My greatest fear about the Baltimore riots
Written by Allen West on April 27, 2015

My greatest fear is that there will come a day when police basically leave the urban communities to their own devices — in other words, abandon them and let them be overrun by gangs and other perpetrators of deplorable behavior. After all, the anarchist sentiment is to not abide by the rule of law — but rather to take matters into the hands of the mob and establish the rule of mobocracy. And if there are no elected officials willing to support the police — realizing that there are bad apples in any batch — then what is the motivation for police officers to patrol those disrespectful and unwelcoming streets?

CNN Anchor Brooke Baldwin Blames Military Veterans for Baltimore Riots

After more than a year of CNN pouring gasoline all over America with hysterical, and oftentimes phony, stories of American racism, the left-wing network’s afternoon anchor Brooke Baldwin finally took it to the next level by blaming American veterans for the Baltimore riots.
