At least 876 people are known to have died in a powerful earthquake in Nepal, with many more feared trapped under rubble, officials say.
The 7.8 magnitude quake struck an area between the capital, Kathmandu, and the city of Pokhara, the US Geological Survey said.
Tremors were felt across the region, with further loss of life in India, Bangladesh and on Mount Everest.
The government has declared a state of emergency in the affected areas.

Prayers offered for those poor people.
I cannot imagine how horrible it would be to be trapped by and earthquake. Imagine your limbs are crushed, and you have no idea if your family is alive, or if your city is alive. You wonder if anyone is looking for you. And all you can do is wait and wait for hours, maybe days, until you die.
Yes...it is truly horrible.
I don’t know these people, and I am of a different faith, but I am praying for them.
One news story mentioned that there are *hundreds of thousands*(!) of tourists in Nepal at this time of year. Nepal is about the size of Iowa. Plenty of damage in India too.

About 300,000 tourists comes to Nepal each trekking season IIRC.
A lot of westerners there. An entire part of Kathmandu, known as Thamel, is basically restaurants and hotels that cater to the tastes of westerners with pizza, French fries, apple pie etc.
My heart breaks to see the photos. One of the most wonderful places I’ve ever been. To see places I was, just brought to rubble, makes it somehow hurt more than when places I’ve never been collapse. I know that sounds selfish but that kind of physical memory makes it more real somehow.
Prayers up for a strong people and a beautiful corner of the world.
Indeed. Nepal may be resource poor but they are some of the richest people on earth IMO. Look at the videos......there is no looting. Religion is integral to everything they do. Some clowns here making stupid comments could learn a lot from the people of Nepal.
