Ironic considering how emaciated the military was during his term, how he pardoned draft dodgers, etc. I was there the whole time, I remember it well.

"...they could dive incredibly deep..." So how deep is that?

I had the privilege of seeing this awesome sub being built in Groton, Ct.
I remember even the props under heavy security guard because of their stealthy noise-free design...which was groundbreaking technology at the time. Might still be.

Y’know, I agree that the Carter is one heck of a cool boat. The only thing unfortunate about it is it’s name.
Do you suppose that it’s possible a boat can be ‘re-named’?

Funny, years and years back, I remember Toshiba getting into hot water because of something to do with computer modeling and design of ultra-quiet propellers or something like that.
My guess is that we’ve got it, the Chinese do too.

It will be an Aircraft Carrier. It will have an astro turf putting green and it will be named the USS Choom.

...they could dive incredibly deep, could haul along at speeds approaching 40 knots, and they were quieter than any other nuclear submarine on the planet. They were also armed with a cache of 50 weapons and wide 660mm torpedo tubes. Why past tense. Have they been retired already?

Not that ironic, actually, given that one of the few things Carter did right was authorize some of the early undersea cable-tapping missions against the Soviet Union.
Naming the boat after him is somewhat appropriate.
