Teen eaten by lion while guarding family crops

A 14-year-old boy has been killed and eaten by a lion as he lay guarding his family’s crops in north-eastern Zimbabwe, a report said on Wednesday.

The boy, whose name was not given, was snatched by the lion in the early hours of Monday in Mariga Village, near Zimbabwe’s border with neighbouring Zambia and Mozambique.

He was in the company of his uncle when the incident happened.

“They were sleeping in the field guarding [the maize crop] against rhinos, elephants and buffaloes,” Peter Enock Chapoto, the local chief, told the official Herald newspaper.

“Usually we build a watch tower so that those manning the field sleep on a high place. However, the boy was in the company of his uncle and they decided to sleep on the ground. The lion came and attacked him before dragging him away.”

He said only the boy’s head had been recovered.

In 2010 a UN agency had to provide tents and other relief for 100 families that were displaced after five lions from the Dande and Chewore safari areas attacked and killed four people in the same district

I one had a Sergeant who was from some place in Equatorial Africa.

I remember him telling me “Sir, life in Africa is hard!”

I would do anything to get out of doing chores when I was his age.

It was much scarier than slasher movies.

Apparently lions don’t like heads either.

Poor kid.

I wonder what he was guarding the crops from...

That is so crazy, poor guy.

It’s astonishing how so much of the world is still 100 years ago, what strange times.

Its gotta be horrible, being eaten alive. I can think of dozens of other ways I’d rather die.

We can only wish this had happened to some yuts in Kenya back in the 70s.

That is "The Ghost and the Darkness".

...They were sleeping in the field guarding...

Sleeping on guard duty usually has consequences.

First thing I thought of, too.

Sad news.
