How about having armed security (MPs) designated on base at various points? Does that actually make some sense?
MPs have been replaced by private rent-a-cops at many military bases.
The military in general has been feminized beyond all recognition, with a pansy fear of guns in the hands of military members on base. Married troops can keep guns in their quarters, generally, but pretty much nobody can carry concealed around base so that they could thwart another Ft Hood.
The state of Alabama has only known me for a few years, yet they trust me with a gun. The military has known me for almost 4 decades, but they don’t.
The military’s “gun-free” zone is an open invitation to scumbags who want to maximize carnage. They’re either extraordinarily stupid, or extraordinarily evil. Can’t decide which.
Leave it to McCain to take a slap at his fellow Republican, or, as Juan would put it, a “wacky bird”.

You have been on capital hill for decades. You’ve had your fingers in many many efforts. You have sided with members from both sides of the isle.
You had good friends there. Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, and many more extreme Leftists have been the most prominent.
You’re aging. It’s been a good run from your point of view.
Your perceptions are not as trustworthy as they used to be. The days are longer and your energy is subsiding.
You have all the money you need. You have a decent wife. You have a good home to go home to, probably more than one.
You came to Washington, D. C. a man that wasn’t extremely rich, and will leave a man who is extremely rich.
Please do the nation a favor. Let some new blood replace you on Capital Hill. Allow the nation to heal. Allow the enemies of our nation both foreign and domestic to find someone else to blur truth, schmuck it up with terrorists, as well as arm and fund them.
