To really understand it you (the rhetorical you) need to know the Author. And you need to have some approximation of a sane view of the Author too. According to some people, God is always in some kind of angry stew with nothing better to do, ever. I submit that view is a huge mistake.
I think the libs want to look at the Old Testament God and his vengeful wrath. But He is long suffering. Look at how long He suffered the idol worship brought into Judea by one of Solomon’s wives before He had the Hebrews taken away into bondage.
He is very patient, but His patience doesn’t last forever. And I believe it is wearing thin.
