One of the country's largest coal utilities will begin closing power plants next month in four states, as strict federal environmental regulations begin to kick in.
The company, American Electric Power, made the announcement in a notice advising employees at the electricity stations that it plans to close six power plants in Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and Indiana, according to news reports.
The company said it plans to shutter as much as 6,000 megawatts of power plant capacity in seven states by the start of 2016. The closures were planned as far back as 2011 to comply with new pollution regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency, called the Mercury and Toxics Standard, that go into effect later this month.
The initial six power plants will close beginning May 31. The plants include the Philip Sporn, Kammer and Kanawha Valley power stations in West Virginia, the Muskingum River Plant in Ohio, the Tanners Creek Plant in Indiana and the Glen Lyn Plant in Virginia. The closures would affect 250 workers.

The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
Collectivists are thinking, Cool, fewer plants, lower costs.
Bump
The one promise that Obama made that he will keep.
Savin’ it for China.
Are power companies thinking, fewer plants, lower expenses, higher rates, bigger profits? Is Big Energy and the EPA in bed? Just something for debate.
Oh goody.
THey did that to us in Wisconisn about 10 years ago, and our idjit Congressman didn’t even know that it happened. He kept touting the big “clean coal” plant in Port Washington. When I pointed out to him that it was gone and converted to natural gas (at higher cost), he said my gripe was with the Public Service Commission, not him.
Furthermore, he was known as “Mr. Conservative” at the time. He also blocked drilling in ANWR from coming to the floor of the House at a time when the Republicans owned the House, the Senate, and Bush was in the White House.
Jim Sensenbrenner is his name, and he is still there, although he is no longer my Congressman, thank God and redistricting.
Again, the people are getting what they voted for. Before he was elected, Obama said that, if elected, he would regulate the coal fired powerplants out of business. He was and he is. Let the yuppies find some other way to charge their electric cars. Better yet, let them starve and freeze to death.
What could possibly go wrong?
When you use the phrase, "Energy prices will necessarily skyrocket", you should never include "under my cap and trade program"
The GOP backed the cap and trade. Obama backed cap and tax.
Plus, cap and trade never passed congress. There is no cap and trade.
Eventually we will start having blackouts in the winter, and everyone will get mad at the power companies.
My neighbour, a donair shop owner, cut the largest sized donair from his menu because he could no longer sell it at a price customers could afford and at a point where he could make money on it.
It’s probably the same with these coal plants. They are probably very old and very dirty and it would cost too much to get them compliant with the new regs for either customers being able to afford them or for the power company to make money off them. The most economically feasible action is to shut them down.
I think that’s the case, I’ve thought that for a long while. Make it impossible for coal companies to operate, so they are basically forced to sell all the land leases to China, who mines and takes everything.
Insanity.
Glen Lyn is already history. You can pick up a nice house in a beautiful area for next to nothing there now. It’s like the river scenes from Lord of The Rings from a canoe or kayak on the New River.
