Why Politicians Need Science (Science as an ideology)
Politico ^ | April 4, 2015 | Michael Shermer

Posted on 04/06/2015 9:37:19 AM PDT by C19fan

Sen. Ted Cruz, who recently announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential ticket, thinks, like many conservatives, global warming isn’t happening. As he said on Seth Meyers’ talk show on March 16, “Satellite data demonstrate for the last 17 years there’s been zero warming, none whatsoever.” It’s no surprise that Cruz picked that figure: 17 years ago was 1998, an “El Nino” year, when global temperatures were artificially elevated after which they returned to their normal gradually increasing rate. When you look at all the data published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (not just the cherry-picked data that fits neatly into a political ideology), the long-term increase in global temperatures is unmistakable.

The author elevates science to an ideology or as some called scientificism. The relationship of science and history is much more complicated and not so Whiggish as Mr. Shermer portrays it. How it is the most scientifically advanced society in the world slaughtered 6 MM Jews? How is it that when Darwin's theory of evolution came out it was used to justify every political-economic theory at the time from extreme Laissez Faire to Socialism/Communism to Racism. How is it that a gov't supposedly founded on the scientific principles of history derived from Marx slaughtered tens of millions? Did you know the Victorian era Workhouses decried by social reformers was the so called product of a "scientific" look by Benthamites/Utilitarians who applied Newtonian like calculations at the issue of social welfare programs. I can go on with other example like eugenics. Science is a tool and just like any tools has been used for both good and ill.

Michael Shermer is the Publisher of Skeptic magazine, a monthly columnist for Scientific American, and a presidential fellow at Chapman University. His new book, on which this article is based, is The Moral Arc: How Science and Reason Lead Humanity Toward Truth, Justice, and Freedom (Henry Holt, 2015).

Actually, Michael Shermer is a true believer in the Church of Global Warming, and nothing like a "skeptic".

He seems to mistakenly believe that there has been no pause in "global warming", although even so-called "climate scientists" have been forced to admit that it exists and that it was not predicted by their global circulation models.

How unscientific of Michael Shermer to disregard what even the IPCC has acknowledged. His attacks on Cruz are misplaced - perhaps he should look in the mirror and cure his own unscientific behavior and politicization of the facts before trying to cure others' supposed faults.

“When you look at all the data published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (not just the cherry-picked data that fits neatly into a political ideology), the long-term increase in global temperatures unmistakable.”

The author cherry picks, then complains about cherry picking by others. Why is a starting point at the year 1980 sacrosanct and “long term”, whereas another starting point would be “cherry picked” and “short term”? What are the uncertainties/inaccuracies in the NOAA data, and how do they compare to the “trend”? Given a trend, how do they know that it will continue and it’s manmade? Given that it will continue, and is manmade, that it’s undesirable? Given that it’s undesirable, that it can and should be improved by changes in our behavior?

If he were honest, he would acknowledge that those who disagree are skeptics, not “deniers”. He and his ilk are making assertions; they are the ones that have the burden of proof. Instead they engage in ad hominem arguments. Is that the best they can do?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_engineering

It’s big business.

Just for starters, destroying the CA agriculture industry was a prerequisite to large-scale importation of ag products from third-world countries.

This is the scale globalists think on.

Every idea that gets touted to “solve” a “problem” is yet another multi-billion dollar boondoggle.

The article is not very credible because they don't show the graph to demonstrate the cherry picking.

But they do provide a link to another article where the graph is shown. If you look at bar graph, it is obvious.

I saw the graph; my comments were in part based on it.

The arguments made are similar to sales pitches for stock-picking algorithms. The latter, though, include the legal disclaimer “past performance does not necessarily predict future results”. Global warming enthusiasts assert the opposite with even flimsier data. There are no consequences to them for failed predictions; they can just pretend they didn’t happen.
