Ricardo Nunez was trimming a tree outside his Echo Park home on a Sunday morning last month when a white truck pulled up and a person inside opened fire, killing the 35-year-old father.
Ray Martinez, the LAPD detective investigating the case, is seeing fewer such fatal drive-by shootings. When Martinez goes behind the yellow tape, he's more commonly working on cases where a gunman has walked straight up to the victim — a walk-up shooting.
As gang culture has become less overt, the killings have become more targeted — and at the same time more chilling.
"They get to see the whole reaction," Martinez said. "It seems more daring."
Jorja Leap, a UCLA anthropologist who studies gang culture, agreed. "In a walk-up, you see who you're killing," Leap said. "You're going to listen to what they say as you shoot them."

Sure am glad we’re getting rid of those Christian values in this country. Being bound by those 10 Commandments and following the teachings of the Catholic Church was just asking too much.
How can we possibly have a civilized society with that kind of ball and chain?
Keep the guns. Outlaw the gangs. Make gang members register as a group, and every time a gang banger kills someone, or commits another crime, punish the group. Gang membership should be punished with mandatory castration. Random gangs, like thugs playing the knockout game, should receive the same treatment. Anytime a group of thugs, male or female, gang up on someone, for whatever the reason, the offending thugs should be treated as gang members, sterilized, imprisoned, and fed goop. Larger gangs should be considered assault gangs, and given worse punishment.

“Christian values” go nowhere without a worship of the Lord.
Not sure how much better it would have been either, with a lukewarm regard to the Lord.
