Accused deserter Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl faces a preliminary hearing July 8 at the Texas base where he's stationed, Stars and Stripes reports.
The Article 32 hearing is similar to a civilian grand jury inquiry, and will determine if there's sufficient evidence to merit a court-martial, the newspaper reports.
In charges announced last week, Bergdahl was accused of desertion and "misbehavior before the enemy," and faces a potential sentence of life in prison if convicted on the latter count, Stars and Stripes reports.

I thought it was great when Bergie was denied a "welcome home hero parade."
At least the people respond rightly even if Der Leader does not.

And, he should never been promoted to Sergeant.

And, he should never been promoted to Sergeant. If common sense has not totally deserted the military, I expect the panel will have him at E-1 in fairly short order.

I believe that is future President Eisenhower on the right. Probably making sure the sad deed gets done, and not hiding himself away. Ike was a good man.

I’m not sure the military had a choice on the promotion. The regs required it, until the adjudication of the event occurred - which is still pending.

I would normally say we could count on TEXAS justice, but since the “work place violence” brass made their appearance, at Fort Hood, and had the gall there to raise their lying heads and turn into serpents, there may not be a guarantee of straight shooting in this Bird Doll trial.
It does make one wonder.

Good evening, Army Bro!
IIRC, the last execution of a deserter from the U.S. Army was Slovik, who died by firing squad.
The photo is of the gallows at the Ohrdruf concentration camp, liberated 70 years ago tomorrow.

That may be a deserter, but unlikely, probably some one in a leadership role at a Nazi death camp about to be strung up. Interesting that Eisenhower, Patton, Bradley and other notable US Army commanders are in attendance.
