Planet Politics: What The Iran Deal Means For Obama's Foreign Policy Legacy

WASHINGTON -- His hair almost fully gray now, his tone somber but earnestly hopeful, President Barack Obama stood in the White House Rose Garden Thursday and made a case for the centerpiece of his second term, for his vision of how to handle dangerous enemies, and for his own role in history.

This was Obama at his own personal summit, carrying out what he views as his destiny: a coolly practical peacemaker.

Invoking three Cold War presidents -- John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan -- the 53-year-old Obama, still young by global statesman standards, claimed to have reached, with Iran, a tentative deal for the ages.

In doing so, Obama said, he and his Big Power partners were showing how, in the 21st century, military might is not the only way, or even the primary way, to advance the cause of peace.

It may take many years to know whether Obama is right. But no one should be surprised that he has faith in his own strategy.

Obama’s legacy is that of shame and hate. He has nothing to boast about.

He is a total disaster.

Many years ? These people are nuts. The Middle East is already on fire and Obama has decided to pour more of his gasoline on top.

He had better keep all those Ivy League Progressive historian pimps around like FDR did to write a false but favorable story about his legacy.

Obama’s hoping to be the guy who killed more Jews than Hitler.

That is why the third verse of my Trayvon Martin Lied concerns our 44th President. The other verses concern Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman, of course.

Why does any conservative care one wit about what “legacy” this treasonous little petulant boy king leaves? NOT I. One thing for sure he will top Pres #39 in the history books, no doubt about that. At least Pres #39 served honorably in the US Military.

Obama, like the Palestinians, sees the Israelis as illegitimate European colonists. Iran is to be admired for throwing out the Shah and ending American imperial rule by a surrogate in Iran.

OK this is where I am going to go right out on a limb wearing my flame proof jacket. I don’t like Obama or his administration but if he is trying to restore some sort of half-normal relations with Iran I think it is a good idea.

Now before we all get the Pavlovian kneejerk response about dealing with the ayatollahs let me explain.

Mao Tse Tung was a communist, he led a dreadful communist regime, yet Richard Nixon, not known for his pinko credentials, cut a deal with China that history has recorded as a good deal.

Mikael Gorbachev was a communist, the leader of the Soviet Union, but Ronnie Reagan, again not a man known for his leftist sympathies, cut a deal with him, a deal history records as a good one.

Now, I grant you Obama is no Nixon or Reagan but nonetheless I think it is a good time for America to reach out to Iran. Why? Well just look at the civil war in the Arab world and look who our current friends are.

In the war between the Shiites led by Iran - a country that used to be America’s best friend in the Middle East, a country that has not attacked the US or the West generally in about two decades, a country that believe it or not actually has religious tolerance with Jews and Christians allowed freedom to worship, and an educated, western-leaning middle class with a degree of equality for women - and the Sunnis led by Saudi Arabia, who is America currently supporting?

The Saudis, the rulers of a medieval, backward, fanatically intolerant, savage, cultureless desert, a country that supplied 11 of the 9/11 hijackers, the home to Usama Bin Laden and the backers of ISIS and whose population loathes and hates the west with every fibre of their being. That’s “our good friends” the Saudis.

If we have to take sides in the Arab civil war, I know which side I would prefer to win and which nation I would love to see disintegrate into its own wahabi hell.

Question: What did Obama commit the US to do to stop the logical consequences of this “deal” (Israeli pre-emptive nuclear strikes)?

Will Mitch McConnell expose this? Congress should pass a law forbidding use of US resources to interfere in Israeli military operations (model it on the Boland Amendment that forbid aiding the Contras). Obama will veto it; Democrats can either join in the vote to override, or stand with Obama against Israel and for Iran.
