How much you have to earn to be considered middle class in every US state
Business Insider ^ | April 2, 2015 | Libby Kane

A recent analysis from Pew Charitable Trusts' Stateline blog found that the middle class shrunk in every state in the US between the years of 2000 and 2013 (the most recent data available).

"Middle class" is a tricky concept. Depending on where you live, you can feel middle class earning as much as $250,000 a year — about five times the US median income of $52,250 from the same time period.

More nonsense from the country that produces only nonsense. The former mega power leader that in a short half decade is reduced to damn near rubble.

In order for these numbers to make any sense they should be broken down by region, not state.

For example 120k/year in the SF bay area is definitely no better than middle class.

That's starvation where my parents live (hint: all the real estate listings in their neighborhood feature the letter "M"). 250-300k per year is about middle class in the South Bay.

My first thought upon seeing the list is that this proves that liberals are elitists who enjoy being above a permanent underclass.

It’s really true. The liberals who do all the organizing and talking are always in upper segments of society, and they sure don’t share the wealth no matter what they say, in their states.

Throw in all the endless punitive taxes and middle America has been economically gang banged.

A better measurement would be After Taxes (to measure the impact of state and local income taxes) and also average housing costs..which vary wildly, and in some states can consume as much as 50% of income..

Agreed, but it would be even better to adjust the numbers by the TOTAL cost of living, not just housing costs. It’s my understanding that when this adjustment is made, California has the lowest average (or median?) percapita income.

I can categorically say that class has little to do with income!

Well, I’m closer to the lower end than the top end, but close to the middle. I don’t feel too bad, I guess.

Really depends on area within many states and family size.

No individual is middle class in NYC at $38K, let alone a family.
