In order for these numbers to make any sense they should be broken down by region, not state.

For example 120k/year in the SF bay area is definitely no better than middle class.

That's starvation where my parents live (hint: all the real estate listings in their neighborhood feature the letter "M"). 250-300k per year is about middle class in the South Bay.

Numbers nowadays are crazy and don't make sense. My dad was making about $10,000 a year in 1970, and his home in SF was about $20,000. The home cost about double what he made per year. That same home is worth about a million now. A person making $100,000 can't afford it. That ain't middle class if you can't afford a home.
