Mayor Bill de Blasio excoriated a controversial Indiana religious freedom law, telling reporters today that it is deeply disturbing and doomed to failure.
Following the lead of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Mr. de Blasio also said he would ban non-essential city travel to the Hoosier State.
Its a deeply disturbing reality right now in Indiana and I hope before its too late, they turn back, Mr. de Blasio, a Democrat, said at an unrelated press conference in Brooklyn. He promised that the law, which critics say will allow businesses to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation, will backfire on the Republican-led state.
Absolutely, I will instruct all New York City agencies to prohibit any non-essential travel to the State of Indiana, he continued. This proposal [in] Indiana really undercuts decades and decades of progress on human rights and civil rights in this country. The notion that a government would allow a version of discrimination undercuts so much of what we fought for.
I also know its doomed to failure, he added. Any effort to exclude or discriminate ultimately proves to be against the will of the people.
When pressed by the Observer on what city travel to Indiana is ever essential, Mr. de Blasio, using the example of his announcement of $3 billion in federal aid to Hurricane Sandy-damaged public housing, said there could be certain companies the city must work with that are out of state. There [could] be a company we have to work with to achieve this resiliency effort, its necessary to go there to achieve something thats essential travel.
Indiana Gov. Mike Pence has faced backlash from businesses, elected officials and celebrities over his support of the law, known formally as the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, and said today he would seek to change and clarify the measure by weeks end. He still defended the law, however, and claimed politicians and the press misunderstood it.
morons in politics are doomed to failure.
I think it would be much, much better if he would ban non-essential city travel to everywhere.
what about the other 19 states with the same law?
What about the same National law drafted by Sen. Schumer and signed by Pres. Bill Clinton?
Mayor de Blah-Blah can go jump off the Empire State Building!
Well, to tell you what Ive thought about this legislation, all along, is that its the gay issue that brought it out ... BUT ... its not JUST about gays, but preventing Christian business owners from being forced into do several things that they consider to be VIOLATIONS of deeply-held religious convictions!
I posted elsewhere ...
To me, this kind of legislation seems to have a lot more to do with OTHER THINGS, other than gays. It seems that the gay issue is driving the discussion, but to me, that gay issue seems to be a minor point, as compared to ALL of what legislation guaranteeing Christian Conscience in business is about.
Unless Im mistaken about what this kind of bill means, I see this bill as preserving the conscience of a Christian owner of a business from serving or doing business with a person who violates that religious conscience by who they are or what they represent or what they stand for. SO, in that sense, it is NOT TARGETED at gays, but all sorts of other things that would violate the Christians conscience!
A sampling of some other things I can think of, in which one would DENY SERVICE to people, would be a group coming in for Pizza who supports ABORTION! That would really violate a Christians conscience.
Or, if a Mormon church group came in and had an after church Pizza gathering some Sunday afternoon. I would DENY THEM SERVICE as they are one of the largest CULT GROUPS in America ... and as far as Im concerned Mormons shouldnt get service from ANY CHRISTIAN BUSINESS WHATSOEVER, ANYWHERE!!
If Mitt Romney were to come in to that Pizza place he SHOULD BE DENIED SERVICE because of clearly being a Mormon!
I would DENY SERVICE to GLENN BECK, too, for his Mormonism!
SO ... it doesnt appear to be a gay issue but a VERY REAL Religious Conscience issue and opens the door to CHRISTIAN BUSINESS to serving Christians and not VIOLATING their religious conscience!
Bill de Blasio needs to STFU and continue running his city into the ground.
Shaddap, you Commie scumbag.
Did his supposedly “former” lesbian wife tell him that?
In the end they will lose.
DeBlasio is wasting his talents as mayor of NY City.
He should be traveling the country teaching others how to convert black lesbians into normal, healthy heterosexual women.
RE: Indiana Religious Law Is Doomed to Failure
Only if conservatives give up the fight and allow themselves to be intimidated.
Looking at how Governors Pence and Hutchinson are reacting, I am slowly and reluctantly inclined to believe that De Blasio might be right.
Somebody needs to inform him that the bigots on the city councils of Detroit, Ypsilanti, and Flint Michigan have all voted to support Michigan’s anti gay marriage stance.
Absolutely, I will instruct all New York City agencies to prohibit any non-essential travel to the State of Indiana, he continued.
isn’t that like....discrimination!
Right! This is a variation on the Clarence Thomas Blind-Scorched-Earth media strategy. It has no basis in fact.
FU Wilhelm
For some reason the liberals are silent on the issue of the similar federal.law and the other states with such laws.
I notice one thing that is happening - Democrats ( OMalley, de Blasio, Hillary, the MSM, Tim Cook, Walmart, etc. ) are all tag teaming to attack RFRA on one side.
On the other side, I dont see ANY UNITED FRONT from Christians, Conservatives and Republicans defending the law.
How do you expect to win the fight when you allow the other side to throw all the kicks and punches and you simply try to duck for cover?
Or is it the case that youve surrendered already?
Where is the Daniel who will dare to stand for what is right in the face of danger?
I doubt they really “dig” each other, or if it’s even some biracial and/or bisexual fetish. I suspect it’s a marriage of convenience, a Billary type sham.
isnt that like....discrimination!
It might be, except there is no such thing as "non-essential travel to the State of Indiana" as far as NYC Gov agencies.
Well he is an expert, if anyone knows about failure it is Bill de Blasio!
